BILL NUMBER:S6428 TITLE OF BILL: An act to authorize a certain individual to take the competitive civil service examination and be placed on the eligible list for appointment as a full-time police officer for the village of East Syracuse, county of Onondaga SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This legislation authorizes the State of New York to allow Christopher Rowe, of the village of East Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, exemption from the age requirements of Civil Service Law Section 58. JUSTIFICATION: The Civil Service Law requires that a full-time competitive police officer be no less than twenty years, and no more than thirty-five years of age. This limits the ability of small municipalities such as East Syracuse to locate and hire the best full-time police officers available. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 58 of the civil service law, or any other law to the contrary, Christopher Rowe, who has been continuously employed by the village of East Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, as a part-time patrolman, shall be eligible to take the competitive civil service examination for the position of police officer and shall, contingent upon his score on such examination, be eligible to be placed on the eligible list for appointment as a full-time patrolman for the village of East Syracuse. Christopher Rowe shall otherwise be subject to the merit and fitness provisions of the civil service law applicable to full-time police officers. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: None. FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None. EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
