LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Steven S. Mazza upon the occasion of his retirement
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat ure of the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Steven S. Mazza upon the occasion of his retirement, to be celebrated on Saturday, May 21, 2011, in Rochester, New York; and WHEREAS, Steven "Steve" Mazza has been a Teamster member since 1969; he was a member of Local 398 from 1969-1977, and has been a member of Local 118 since 1997; he worked various construction jobs, some of which include the widening of Jefferson Road, the Irondequoit Bay Bridge and the transformation of the Troup Howell Bridge extension of Route 490 which crosses the Genesee River in downtown Rochester; and WHEREAS, In 1977, Steven Mazza transferred from Local 398 to Local 118 after accepting a position at Wegmans Food Markets; there he was a ware houseman for the first three years and was also appointed a Union Steward in 1979, representing members in food service, produce, frozen goods, groceries and transportation; and WHEREAS, In 1980, Steve Mazza transferred to the transportation department to become a driver; in 1988, he was appointed Sargent-at-Arms and in 1993, was elected Chief Steward, responsible for all union members at Wegmans; that same year, he was named to Local 118 as a full time Business Agent; and WHEREAS, In 1996, Steve Mazza was appointed as a Trustee on Joint Council 17; he was made Vice-President in 1998 and was elected to that position in 2000; that particular year, he was designated as a Trustee on Joint Council 46; and WHEREAS, In 2003, Steve Mazza was elected President of Teamsters Local and was made Vice-President of Joint Council 46; he has been direct ly responsible for negotiating every Wegmans contract since 1985; and WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as President and Principle Officer, Steve Mazza represented the members at the following companies: Staples, Empire Beef, Eber Brothers Liquor, Wegmans Food Markets and B. Giambrone & Company; and WHEREAS, In 2009, Steve Mazza became a Labor Trustee with the New York State Teamsters Benefit Funds; he focused his efforts on protecting the members' healthcare and retirement benefits; and WHEREAS, For the past 42 years, Steve Mazza rendered faithful, consci entious and valuable service to the International Brotherhood of Team sters Union; and WHEREAS, In his capacity as President and Principle Officer of Team sters Local 118, Steve Mazza served with loyalty, honor and distinction; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, Steve Mazza was governed by a keen sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems; and WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Nettie, and their four children and nine grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and WHEREAS, During his tenure with the International Brotherhood of Team sters Union, Steve Mazza earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Steven S. Mazza upon the occasion of his retirement; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran smitted to Steven S. Mazza.
