LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Bangladesh Independence WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the people of this State acknowledge significant milestones of historical importance; the Independence of Bangladesh is such an event; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to join with fellow Bengali citizens to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the declaration of independence from Pakistan; it is also the 64th anniversary of the decision of Britain to withdraw from the subcontinent of India, leading to the formation of West Pakistan and East Pakistan, now Bangladesh; and WHEREAS, On this special occasion, we honor the words of Sheikh Muji- bur Rahman: "Today Bangladesh is a sovereign and independent coun- try...The Bengalis are fighting [West Pakistani armed forces] with great courage for an independent Bangladesh. May God aid us in our fight for freedom. Joy Bangla."; and WHEREAS, The worldwide community of Bengali people continually demon- strates their contribution to the arts, sciences, medicine, industry and technology continuing to show a resilience and fortitude which are hall- marks of democracy; and WHEREAS, The celebration of Bangladesh Independence Day reminds us of the ancient culture which has emerged as one of the foremost examples of the integration of various religions, languages and cultures to realize a Nation which incorporates varied backgrounds and histories to provide for an independent Nation colonized for two centuries; and WHEREAS, The State of New York recognizes the accomplishments of the Bengali people around the world and commends the integrity of the citi- zens of Bangladesh and their perseverance in their fight for independ- ence; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Bangladesh Independence; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to the Embassy of Bangladesh.
