LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Adirondack
Medical Center

WHEREAS,  Our  hospitals  serve  the  vital purpose of providing for the
healthcare needs of our citizens through excellence in the  delivery  of
medical services; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality of life in the communities across this great  State  of  New
York  is enriched by the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organ-
izations of distinction whose singular purpose is the care  and  welfare
of others; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of Adirondack Medical Center; and
  WHEREAS, What is known today as the Adirondack Medical Center began as
two  separate  hospitals,  the General Hospital of Saranac Lake, and the
Placid Memorial Hospital of Lake Placid; and
  WHEREAS, Built at the top of Winona Avenue, the  General  Hospital  of
Saranac  Lake  was  founded  in 1911, through the efforts of many public
citizens, and was presented to Saranac Lake by M. Redfield  Proctor  and
Miss  Emily  Dutton  Proctor on March 11, 1913; at the time, it accommo-
dated twelve patients, and in 1914, an isolation cottage for  four  more
patients was added; and
  WHEREAS,  By  1961, it had become obvious that the General Hospital of
Saranac Lake could go no further on the  Winona  Avenue  site,  and  the
decision  was  made  to  erect  a new hospital on a 25-acre site on Lake
Colby donated by the Latour  Fuel  Company;  the  present  facility  was
constructed  and  dedicated in 1967; led by the generosity of Mr. Edmund
Guggenheim, the building included the shell for a third floor  that  was
completed in 1968; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Placid  Memorial Hospital Fund, under the leadership of
Mary Prime, was organized in 1947, and plans for construction of  a  new
hospital  to  be  located on a Church Street parcel, donated by the Shea
Family, were developed; and
  WHEREAS, Doors were opened at the Placid  Memorial  Hospital  of  Lake
Placid on February 4, 1951, to serve the first patient; and
  WHEREAS,  Adirondack  Medical  Center  was  incorporated on January 1,
1991, when the General Hospital of Saranac Lake and the Placid  Memorial
Hospital of Lake Placid consolidated; and
  WHEREAS,  A  major  capital  construction  project, Adirondack Medical
Center for the 21st Century, was completed at both sites in 2003; and
  WHEREAS, Answering the call to ensure continued skilled  nursing  care
in the Tri-Lakes, Adirondack Medical Center took over ownership of Mercy
Healthcare Center in Tupper Lake and Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid
on January 1, 2007; and
  WHEREAS,  For  over a century, Adirondack Medical Center has continued
its tradition of providing quality health care and dedicated service  to
the members of its community; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
commend and recognize those esteemed  institutions  within  the  medical
community  for  their  extraordinary  and sustained contributions to the
improvement of life; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  100th  Anniversary of Adirondack Medical Center, fully
confident that it will continue to play a leadership role in  healthcare
for many years to come; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Adirondack Medical Center.
