LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 175th Anniversary of The Tomp kins Trust Company WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and character of life in this great Empire State is indelibly enriched by the faithful efforts of those financial institutions and their leader ship who devote their purpose to promoting economic vitality and service the public need; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem orate the 175th Anniversary of the Tompkins Trust Company; and WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1836 as the Tompkins County Bank, the Tompkins Trust Company has stood as one of the oldest buildings in its community; and WHEREAS, With its focus on long-term results for shareholders, custom ers and communities, the Tompkins Trust Company has been built on its community partnerships, listening to customers' desires and being a good employer; and WHEREAS, The Tompkins Trust Company's focus on conservative banking and avoiding the potential pitfalls of sub-prime mortgages has kept the bank successful and profitable through 175 years of fluctuating economic times; and WHEREAS, The Tompkins Trust Company has been a good citizen since its inception; when called upon, it loaned the state government $25,000 in support of fighting the Civil War, and forgave Ithaca College's debts during the Great Depression, when the college struggled to continue running; and WHEREAS, More recently, the Tompkins Trust Company supported the creation of the Ithaca Commons and Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services, in addition to funding the repair of the clock towers on The Commons in exchange for signage; and WHEREAS, Moreover, the Tompkins Trust Company employees have for years raised money in annual fundraising drives for the United Way and Relay for Life, and recently started a Community Shred Day, which offers free document shredding services to all; and WHEREAS, All the while, the Tompkins Trust Company has maintained its status as the bank with the largest number of accounts in the county and consistent profitability as a company; and WHEREAS, Known as an exceptional workplace, the Tompkins Trust Company employs a surprising amount of staff members who have recently cele brated 50 or 60 years with the company; far more have been with the company for 25 to 30 years; and WHEREAS, This Legislative Body looks favorably upon the strong role which institutions such as the Tompkins Trust Company play in strength ening the social and economic fabric of our communities through provid ing growth opportunities for citizens and businesses; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the Tompkins Trust Company, and to wish this financial institution continued success in its vital work on behalf of its customers; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran smitted to the Tompkins Trust Company.
