 ATIVE  RESOLUTION commemorating the 207th Anniversary of the Inde-
 ce of Haiti from France

 S, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize  and  pay
 tribute  to  the  cultural  heritage  of  the  ethnic groups which
 se and contribute to the richness and diversity of  the  community
  State of New York; and
 EAS,  Attendant  to such concern, and in keeping with its time-ho-
 traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body  to  commem-
  the  207th  Anniversary of the Independence of Haiti from France;

 EAS, On  January  1,  1804,  after  a  prolonged  struggle,  Haiti
 imed its independence from France, becoming the second independent
 in the Western Hemisphere and the first free black republic in the
  and
 EAS,  The celebration of Haitian independence affirms the culture,
 ty and self-esteem of a people; it  honors  a  rich  heritage  and
 nates  Haitian  history and tradition, as well as the spirit of an
 table people; and
 EAS, The people of this great State and nation and Haiti  enjoy  a
 and  abiding  relationship rooted in kinship and culture, and many
 rkers proudly trace their own roots to Haiti; and
 EAS, The Anniversary of the Independence of Haiti from France is a
 o celebrate the aspirations and values that have been shared  with
 ns for generations and to recognize the countless contributions of
 ans and New Yorkers of Haitian descent to every aspect of society;

 EAS,  The State of New York is greatly enriched by its large popu-
  of citizens of Haitian ancestry; and
 EAS, The 207th Anniversary of  Haiti's  Independence  provides  an
 unity  to recognize the significance of their contributions to the
 y and character of life, and, through events and  activities,  for
 eople to gain a greater appreciation of Haitian history and tradi-
  and of the role Haitian Americans have played, and will  continue
 y, in our society; and
 EAS,  This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
 ize such events of significance  which  foster  ethnic  pride  and
 ify  the  cultural  diversity  that represents and strengthens the
