LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Ononda ga Free Library WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the quality and character of life in the communities across the great State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi zenry; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem orate the 50th Anniversary of the Onondaga Free Library; and WHEREAS, The Onondaga Free Library has proudly given 50 years of library service to the Syracuse community; and WHEREAS, The original library opened to the community on December 3, 1961; the library's first location was in the Onondaga Town Hall; within a few years, it was realized that this space was inadequate to properly serve its community; and WHEREAS, In 1969, the building at the library's current location, 4840 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, New York, was constructed; and WHEREAS, Ten years later, in 1979, the building was expanded to accom modate its growing community demand; and WHEREAS, Keeping up to date with technological advancements, the library has added many electronic devices to its repertoire and added another extension onto the building; on May 1, 2010, the Onondaga Free Library held its grand opening of the newly expanded and renovated library, which can be seen today; and WHEREAS, In fulfilling its mission, the Onondaga Free Library provides reading materials, reference information, Internet and word processing access, and audio-visual resources to the community, as well as access to other information sources through existing county, state and national networks; the Onondaga Free Library also serves as a community meeting place and cultural center; in addition, children's programs are provided with emphasis on preschool learning; and WHEREAS, This occasion presents an opportunity for this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Onondaga Free Library; and WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Onondaga Free Library under the able leadership of Director Susan Morgan, may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks forward to contin uing to serve the educational, cultural and intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Onondaga Free Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran smitted to Susan Morgan, Director of the Onondaga Free Library.
