ATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Town iba, New York S, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem- the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the body of this great Empire State; and EAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- ng traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem- the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Scriba, in Oswego County, New and EAS, This most auspicious occasion will be commemorated by a cele- n held on June 15-17 at the Scriba Municipal Building, and the Justice Center; other events will be held at the Scriba Volunteer n's Hall and the Scriba Child Care Center; and EAS, The Town of Scriba was created by an Act of the State Legis- passed in the fall of 1811; and EAS, Scriba was formed from the Town of Mexico that in turn was from the Scriba Patent, an area that included all the land n Oneida Lake and Lake Ontario, and the Oswego and Salmon Rivers; f the land in the township was removed in 1848 to form the City of ; and EAS, Originally, Scriba had an agricultural economy with apples rawberries as the main crops; there were a number of apple dryers roduced the dried apples that were shipped to many European desti- s, while the strawberries found a ready market in New York City; EAS, Other businesses such as cooper and blacksmith shops devel- n Scriba; the dairy industry was also an important business in the ity; and EAS, Weather conditions like the big freeze of the early 1930s, mpetition from other areas reduced the agricultural importance of wnship of Scriba; and EAS, For a while, Muck farming was an important industry in the with lettuce being the major crop; today, onions are the most ant product; and EAS, As the 20th Century progressed, industry became the economic of Scriba; three atomic plants were established at Nine Mile making the township a leading power producer; and EAS, The abundance of power plus water from Lake Ontario resulted racting Alcan (now Novelus), an aluminum plant, to Scriba; and EAS, Today, the Town of Scriba is largely a bedroom community with f its citizens working in Oswego, or Syracuse; there have been housing developments over the years to help house the over 6,800 nts; and EAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth ange, the Town of Scriba continues its commitment to enhancing the y of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institu- and educational climate, and providing all essential services; herefore, be it LVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to orate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Scriba, New York, izing the significance of the role it continues to play in the f the community of the State of New York; and be it further LVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- d to the Town of Scriba, New York.
