LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to those fraternal organizations of high purpose and worthy accomplishment whose endeavors have faithfully served the welfare of the citizens of the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem orate the 175th Anniversary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, to be celebrated on May 4, 2011, at the Doubleday's Restaurant & Sports Grille, in Dobbs Ferry, New York; and WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians is the oldest and largest Irish-American organization in the United States with approximately 100,000 members nationwide; their motto is, "Friendship, Unity and True Christian Charity."; the Ancient Order of Hibernians was organized on May 14, 1836 at St. James Church in New York City in order to protect the Catholic Church and Irish Catholic immigrants from a mounting threat of bigotry and discrimination; and WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians became involved in the New York City Saint Patrick's Day Parade in 1853; the organization went on to become the parade's main organizer and chief sponsor for next 150 years; and WHEREAS, The Ancient Order of Hibernians established a Division in the City of Yonkers on November 1, 1890; Division One of Yonkers is named after Myles Scully, who served as Yonkers Police Lieutenant and was an Irish-American community leader; and WHEREAS, Today, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Myles Scully Division One of Yonkers continues to carry on the proud work of the organization, through its promotion of Irish culture and history; it also donates a significant amount to Irish and Catholic charities throughout Yonkers; and
WHEREAS, Currently, the Officers of Division One are: President Kevin Ellis, Vice-President Thomas Allison, Recording Secretary Robert Eggen, Financial Secretary Daniel Mulvey, Treasurer Michael Morley, Chairman of the Standing Committee Kevin Hartnett, Marshall John Ellis and Sentinel Jack McDonald; and WHEREAS, Organizations of singular distinction such as the Ancient Order of Hibernians Myles Scully Division One of Yonkers provide a model for enhancing the quality of life in the community and, as such, merit the grateful praise of the community of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians; and be it further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran smitted to the aforementioned officers of the Ancient Order of Hiberni ans Myles Scully Division One of Yonkers.
