BILL NUMBER:S2739 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend chapter 31 of the laws of 1985, amending the education law and other laws relating to regents scholarships in certain professions, in relation to extending the effectiveness of certain provisions thereof PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: Extends the provisions of the physician loan forgiveness program. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 17 of chapter 31 of the laws of 1985, amending the education law relating to regents scholarships in certain professions, as amended by section 1 of part I of chapter 57 of the laws of 2008. JUSTIFICATION: The Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness program inadvertently sunset at the end of 2008-09. This extension would allow the program to continue through the next academic year. The program encourages doctors to serve in high needs areas of the state to help address a physician shortage. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: A.11421 of 2010 was reported from Assembly Higher Education Committee. FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: $780,000 EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately and shall be deemed to have been in full force and effect on the same date and in the same manner as part I of chapter 57 of the laws of 2008 took effect.

AN ACT to amend chapter 31 of the laws of 1985, amending the education
law and other laws relating to regents scholarships in certain
professions, in relation to extending the effectiveness of certain
provisions thereof
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 17 of chapter 31 of the laws of 1985, amending the
education law and other laws relating to regents scholarships in certain
professions, as amended by section 1 of part I of chapter 57 of the laws
of 2008, is amended to read as follows:
S 17. This act shall take effect immediately; provided, however, that
the scholarship and loan forgiveness programs established pursuant to
the provisions of this act shall terminate upon the granting of such
awards for the 2008-2009 school year PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT THE REGENTS
PHYSICIAN LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM ESTABLISHED PURSUANT TO THIS ACT
SHALL NOT TERMINATE UNTIL THE GRANTING OF SUCH AWARDS FOR THE 2011-2012
SCHOOL YEAR, PROVIDED THAT THE FINAL DISBURSEMENT OF ANY MULTI-YEAR
AWARDS GRANTED IN SUCH SCHOOL YEAR SHALL BE PAID.
S 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall be deemed to
have been in full force and effect on the same date and in the same
manner as part I of chapter 57 of the laws of 2008, took effect.
