LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commemorating  the  175th  Anniversary  of  the
Chemung County Sheriff's Office

WHEREAS, The quality  and  sanctity  of  community  life  are  cherished
values,  worthy of safeguarding; this Legislative Body is moved to honor
those who preserve and protect such values, lauding  particularly  their
unwavering  courage  and  dedication  in  the daily performance of their
duties; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its  long-
standing  traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Chemung County Sheriff's Office upon the occasion of the celebration  of
its 175th Anniversary as Chemung County's oldest law enforcement agency;
and
  WHEREAS,  This  truly  auspicious  milestone  will  be celebrated with
events throughout the year including a special Anniversary Dinner,  open
to  the  public,  to be held at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Center in
Elmira on Saturday, June 11, 2011; and
  WHEREAS, Situated along New York's southern border with  Pennsylvania,
Chemung County is a largely rural county; covering an area of 412 square
miles,  with  a  population of 91,070, Chemung County has been most ably
served by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office since its establishment in
1836; and
  WHEREAS, The duties and responsibilities of the Office of the  Sheriff
have, of course, changed over the years and continue to change as do the
needs of the citizens served by the dedicated men and women of the Sher-
iff's Office; and
  WHEREAS, The Chemung County Sheriff's Office is currently comprised of
four  divisions,  the  Community  Services/Civil,  Corrections, Criminal
Investigations and Police Services  Divisions;  it  is  a  full  service
police agency and employs 160 people who stand ready to serve when need-
ed; and
  WHEREAS,  The  dedicated efforts of public servants, such as the offi-
cers and other members of the staff  of  the  Chemung  County  Sheriff's
Office,  who unselfishly devote their lives to the preservation of order
and the protection of others are worthy  of  the  full  praise  of  this
Legislative  Body  and  the people of the State of New York; now, there-
fore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the Chemung County Sheriff's Office
upon  the  occasion  of its special Anniversary Dinner on June 11, 2011,
paying tribute to the Department for 175 years of  selfless  dedication,
devotion  and  commitment  of  the highest caliber in providing service,
public safety and law enforcement to the residents of Chemung County and
the State of New York; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, Elmira, New York.
