LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the East Islip Public Library WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the quality and character of life in the communities across the great State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi- zenry; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long- standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem- orate the 50th Anniversary of the East Islip Public Library, to be cele- brated on Tuesday, June 21, 2011; and WHEREAS, The East Islip Public Library has given 50 years of library service to the communities of East Islip, Great River, Islip Terrace and North Great River; and WHEREAS, The original library opened to the community on June 21, 1961; the Library's first location was in the former building of the First National Bank of East Islip on the west side of town; within a few years, the staff and Board of Trustees realized that this space was inadequate and soon work began to build a 16,800 square foot library at 381 Main Street; that particular facility opened to the public on June 21, 1967; and WHEREAS, During 2003, 2004 and the spring of 2005, the existing build- ing was renovated and a new wing was added, more than doubling the size of the library; on June 21, 2005, the new state-of-the-art East Islip Public Library opened to the public; and WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the East Islip Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and intellectu- al needs of the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the East Islip Public Library; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran- smitted to the East Islip Public Library.
