LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Southside
Hospital

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body  to  recognize  those
hospitals within the State of New York which provide outstanding medical
care  and vital services to meet the healthcare needs of their patients;
and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing  traditions,  this  Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of Southside Hospital, to be celebrated at a
Centennial Gala on Friday, October 21, 2011, at the Hyatt  Regency  Long
Island in Hauppauge, New York; and
  WHEREAS,  Established  in  1911  by  a  group of physicians, Southside
Hospital began as the Babylon Hospital, a  21-bed,  non-profit  facility
located in a frame house in Babylon, New York; and
  WHEREAS,  From  its inception until the late 1950s, Southside Hospital
was the only hospital between  Rockville  Centre  and  Southampton,  New
York; and
  WHEREAS,  Over  the  years,  Southside Hospital has undergone numerous
expansions and today, is a complex comprised of several  buildings  with
growing programs in nearly all areas of healthcare; and
  WHEREAS,  Always  at  the  forefront  of quality healthcare, Southside
Hospital's proud heritage includes a great number  of  firsts  and  many
significant milestones; and
  WHEREAS,  As  part  of  North  Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System,
Southside Hospital has the ability to bring  the  latest  medical  inno-
vation,  education and clinical advances to residents in Suffolk County;
and
  WHEREAS, Southside Hospital is home to a  top-flight  cardiac  surgery
and interventional program with a new cardiac catheterization lab; and
  WHEREAS,  In  conjunction  with its expanding cardiovascular services,
Southside Hospital recently added a cardiac surgery program,  headed  by
Dr.  Alan  Hartman, one of New York State's preeminent cardiac surgeons;
and
  WHEREAS, Southside Hospital's newly added hybrid operating room allows
complex cases, often requiring a combination of procedures from multiple
specialists, to be completed in a single operating room; and
  WHEREAS, In 2006, this illustrious institution became the first commu-
nity hospital in New York State to receive Department of Health approval
to perform elective angioplasty; and
  WHEREAS, As part of North Shore-Long  Island  Jewish  Health  System's
Harvey  Cushing  Institutes  of  Neuroscience,  Southside  Hospital is a
state-designated stroke center; its  brain  injury  rehabilitation  unit
provides  unparalleled expertise and compassionate care for those recov-
ering from the most severe cases of brain trauma; and
  WHEREAS, Moreover, Southside Hospital has  the  only  New  York  State
designated brain injury unit on Long Island; and
  WHEREAS, Always at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, Southside
Hospital uses innovative remote presence technology, the assistance of a
robot in the Emergency Room, as part of its Telestroke program; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Telestroke  program  connects patients at the Southside
Hospital Emergency Room, via robot, to a North Shore University Hospital
stroke neurologist 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and
  WHEREAS, In addition  to  its  unsurpassed  cardiac  and  neuroscience
programs,  Southside Hospital provides top quality orthopedic, obstetric
and gynecological specialties; and

  WHEREAS, As Southside Hospital embarks upon its second hundred  years,
it  does  so  as  the  first tertiary facility in Suffolk County for the
region's premier healthcare provider, the North Shore-Long Island Jewish
Health System; and
  WHEREAS,  For  over  a  century,  Southside  Hospital, with its expert
staff, has had a long and sustained commitment to the health and welfare
of the citizens of Long Island and merits the  highest  commendation  of
this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary  of  Southside  Hospital;  and  be  it
further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Southside Hospital.
