.SO DOCS R6564 RESO TEXT 2009 LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Philip Lilienthal upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by the Irondale Ensemble Project on November 15, 2010 WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to call attention to individuals and organizations that devote their time and energies to the cultural enrichment of the Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Philip Lilienthal upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by the Irondale Ensemble Project at its Awards Ceremony to be held on Monday, November 15, 2010; and WHEREAS, In 1983, Jim Niesen, Terry Greiss and Barbara Mackenzie-Wood created a theater company dedicated to the ongoing exploration of thea ter as an art form and a force for educational and social change; and WHEREAS, Through the power of the Ensemble Project, Irondale creates and presents theater, performance and education programs that challenge traditional assumptions about art and help us to better understand today's world; the Irondale Center, its theater, laboratory and class room, is a home for ensemble artists of all disciplines and cultures and a resource for the community; and WHEREAS, The founder, CEO and President of Global Camps Africa, Philip Lilienthal has continually demonstrated extreme competence, extraor dinary intelligence and diligent leadership in his unwavering service to both the Irondale Ensemble Project and the community; and WHEREAS, Philip Lilienthal is a graduate of Bronx High School of Science, Amherst College and the University of Virginia Law School; and WHEREAS, In 1966, as a Peace Corps Volunteer, Philip Lilienthal found ed Ethiopia's first residential camp; and WHEREAS, In addition, for 30 years, Philip Lilienthal served as the Owner and Director of Camp Winnebago in Maine, the summer home and retreat for Irondale since 1986; and WHEREAS, A highly-respected attorney, Philip Lilienthal was in private practice from 1974 to 2002; prior to that time, he practiced in a Wash ington D.C. law firm, was Attorney/Advisor for the Peace Corps, was Regional Director for Mindanao, Philippines and Deputy Director of Thai land for the Peace Corps; and WHEREAS, Philip Lilienthal has served on the National Board of the American Camp Association (ACA), where he was Legislative Liaison of the New York
Section Board of ACA, and the Maine Youth Camping Association; he is also a Standards Visitor for ACA; and WHEREAS, In 2003, Philip Lilienthal founded a non-profit called Global Camps Africa; its purpose is to use residential summer camp as a vehicle for AIDS education and prevention to young people; as of 2009, it has had 33 camp sessions for 4200 children and youth in South Africa; an essential component is the after-camp program, where ex-campers come to one of the nine neighborhood clubs every other Saturday to continue their education and get support and fun for the day; and WHEREAS, Philip Lilienthal and Global Camps Africa have received recognition from the Board of Supervisors of Fairfax County, both Houses of the Virginia Legislature, the American Camp Association, The Private Independent Camp Association, The Maine Youth Camp Association and the Ontario (Canada) Camping Association; and WHEREAS, In addition, articles have appeared in the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, the BOSTON GLOBE, the WASHINGTON TIMES and the JOHANNESBURG STAR, among others, including many articles in THE CONNECTION, the RESTON TIMES and THE OBSERVER; Global Camps Africa has also been covered by BBC and on local TV stations in the Washington, D.C. market, includ ing Channels 4, 5 and 9; radio coverage has included WTOP and the Chica go NPR station on Worldview; and WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife, Lynn, their three children, Andy, Cathy and Ben and five grandchildren, Ella, Maya, Zev, Levi and Rafe, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ ual for the benefit of others which Philip Lilienthal has displayed throughout his life; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Philip Lilienthal upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by the Irondale Ensemble Project on November 15, 2010; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran smitted to Philip Lilienthal.
