AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to the qualifications of
  medical directors at state correctional facilities

  THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section  1.  The correction law is amended by adding a new section 624
to read as follows:
  S 624.  MEDICAL  DIRECTOR;  PSYCHIATRIC  CERTIFICATION  AND  TRAINING.
WITHIN  ONE  HUNDRED  EIGHTY  DAYS  OF  RECEIVING  AN APPOINTMENT AS THE
MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF A STATE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, SUCH MEDICAL DIRECTOR
SHALL BE TRAINED AND/OR CERTIFIED IN ADDICTION MEDICINE IN  SUCH  A  WAY
THAT MEETS ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
  1.  THE  MEDICAL  DIRECTOR HOLDS A SUBSPECIALTY BOARD CERTIFICATION IN
ADDICTION PSYCHIATRY FROM THE AMERICAN BOARD OF MEDICAL SPECIALITIES;
  2. THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR HOLDS  AN  ADDICTION  CERTIFICATION  FROM  THE
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ADDICTION MEDICINE;
  3.  THE  MEDICAL  DIRECTOR HOLDS A SUBSPECIALTY BOARD CERTIFICATION IN
ADDICTION MEDICINE FROM THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC ASSOCIATION; AND
  4. THE MEDICAL DIRECTOR HAS COMPLETED NOT LESS  THAN  EIGHT  HOURS  OF
TRAINING WITH RESPECT TO THE TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF OPIOID-ADDICTED
PATIENTS.  SUCH  TRAINING  MAY BE PROVIDED THROUGH CLASSROOM SITUATIONS,
SEMINARS AT PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY MEETINGS, ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS, OR
OTHERWISE. THE TRAINING SHALL BE SPONSORED BY ANY ORGANIZATION THAT  THE
DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HYGIENE DETERMINES TO BE APPROPRIATE.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
