BILL NUMBER:A9231 TITLE OF BILL: An act to repeal the closing paragraph of section 173 of the agriculture and markets law, relating to beekeeper and apiary surveys SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This bill would repeal provisions enacted in 2007 that provided that beekeepers apply for a registration number and disclose the locations of their hives as well as allowing the Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets to make surveys apiary yards. JUSTIFICATION: This state is abuzz with beekeeping activity as our hives produce about four million pounds of honey annually with a total value in excess of $5 million. More than that, our beekeepers are vital to ensuring that our fruit trees and other crops are pollinated. While well intentioned these provisions which were enacted in 2007 have proved to be duplicative and unutilized. To that end, this bill would simply repeal those provisions which were enacted in 2007 thus providing much needed potential savings to the state and removing unneeded regulations. There is no doubt that passage of this bill would make bees all across New York sing with sweet happiness as they produce nature's finest nectar - honey! PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.
