LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Great Neck Union Free School
District for 50 years of providing comprehensive Summer
School/Enrichment and Summer Music Programs for the students of the
district

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend education programs and institutions of commitment and high
achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the
Great Neck Union Free School District for 50 years of providing a Summer
School/Enrichment Program and Summer Music Program for the students of
the district; and
WHEREAS, The district's 2012 Summer School/Enrichment Program and the
2012 Summer Music Program provided instructional classes for 810
students, a two percent increase over the previous year's enrollment and
was also the eleventh year the district's academic intervention program
was available; and
WHEREAS, In total, 85 courses were offered, of which 33 academic
intervention courses were for children in Kindergarten through eighth
grade and 34 were high school level enrichment courses; and
WHEREAS, The Great Neck School District also offers New York State
Regents Examinations during the summers; during summer 2012, 124 Regents
Examinations and 12 Regents Competency Examinations were offered; and
WHEREAS, The district's elementary school summer program has been
expanded to meet more needs and is now ready to serve first through
fifth grade students; and
WHEREAS, Also available during the 2012 summer school/enrichment
program were more mathematics courses along with TESL courses, which 106
students attended; and
WHEREAS, The Great Neck Union Free School District's entire summer
program includes: summer enrichment, open to students entering grades
six through nine, with over 30 different extracurricular courses,
including rocketry, astronomy, culinary arts, architecture, instrumental
music, sewing, computer programming, first aid, fine arts, drama, and
forensics, musical theater, with a drama, vocal and dance performing
arts workshop offered daily for students entering grades six through
nine; and
WHEREAS, Academic intervention courses are offered in the core subject
areas for students in need of additional instructional support during
the summer months; students entering grades six through nine can regis-
ter for classes in math, English, social studies, science and English as
a Second Language; and
WHEREAS, Reading intervention classes are offered for students enter-
ing grades one through five along with math support for students enter-
ing grades four and five; ESL for students entering Kindergarten through
Grade 12; a high school program to provide remedial instruction for high
school students who must retake an academic course in order to receive
credit; and Regents Examinations for students who are looking to take an
August New York State Regents exam; and, new courses are being developed
for summer 2013; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Great Neck Union Free School District for 50 years of
providing Summer School/Enrichment and Summer Music Programs for the
students of the district; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Great Neck Union Free School District.
