LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 85th Anniversary of Our Lady of
Mercy Academy

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of commitment and high achievement whose
purpose and endeavors prove a dedication to the pursuit of excellence in
the education of the young women of this noble Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 85th Anniversary of Our Lady of Mercy Academy, to be cele-
brated on April 26, 2013; and
WHEREAS, This fine event will take place at the Huntington Crescent
Club in Huntington, New York, and will honor several distinguished hono-
rees; they are: Joseph Salvo; Barbara Breen, Class of 1973; Marilyn and
Michelle Martone, Class of 1994; Deacon Jerry and Suzanne Reda; and
posthumously, Sister Jacqueline Walsh, RSM, Class of 1970; and
WHEREAS, In September of 1928, Our Lady of Mercy Academy (OLMA) opened
its doors to a small class of young girls who were destined to be its
first graduating class; since that time, more than 6,500 women have
prayed in the chapel, sung Christmas carols on the marble stairs,
competed for the coveted Sports Night titles, have been involved in
thousands of service projects, and diligently studied to be accepted
into competitive colleges; during those four years at the Academy, these
special students became "Women of Mercy"; and
WHEREAS, OLMA is dedicated to providing a comprehensive education
grounded in the charism of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters
of Mercy; guided by the principles of Fides, Mores and Cultura, the
faculty and staff educate young women within a compassionate environment
to empower them to be authentic witnesses of Catholic values in the
global community; and
WHEREAS, Ably led by Principal Joan Gordon, OLMA continues to prosper
today and into the future; and
WHEREAS, Within the 21st Century, OLMA stands prepared to reach out,
in earnest and enthusiastic quest of its mission, to promote the maximum
growth of every student, establishing standards and building skills
which will carry its students and the citizens of its community into the
future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 85th Anniversary of Our Lady of Mercy Academy; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Principal Joan Gordon, Our Lady of Mercy Academy and to the
aforementioned honorees.
