LEGISLATIVE   RESOLUTION  memorializing  Governor  Andrew  M.  Cuomo  to
proclaim April 18, 2013, as Ependymoma Awareness Day in the State of New
York

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body, representing the people of the State  of
New York, recognizes specific days that bring attention and awareness to
important  issues  that  affect  the  lives of the people living in this
great Empire State; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense  of  this  Legislative  Body  to  memorialize
Governor  Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Thursday, April 18, 2013, as Epen-
dymoma Awareness Day in the State  of  New  York,  in  conjunction  with
National Ependymoma Awareness Day; and
  WHEREAS, Childhood Ependymoma is a disease in which malignant (cancer)
cells form in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord; and
  WHEREAS,  The brain controls vital functions such as memory and learn-
ing, the five senses (hearing, sight,  smell,  taste,  and  touch),  and
emotion;  the  spinal  cord  is  made up of bundles of nerve fibers that
connect the brain with nerves in most parts of the body; and
  WHEREAS, Frequent headaches, seizures, recurrent nausea and  vomiting,
and  loss  of  balance  or  trouble walking are all symptoms that may be
caused by childhood ependymoma; and
  WHEREAS, Adult and pediatric cancers are often thought of and  treated
separately;  a collaborative group of scientists and health care provid-
ers have joined together to improve the diagnosis, treatment  and  lives
of people living with ependymoma; and
  WHEREAS, These varied practitioners are dedicated to the highest prin-
ciples of professionalism and maintain these standards through education
and  ongoing  clinical  research,  as  well  as a personal commitment to
improve the lives of people living with ependymoma; and
  WHEREAS, People of all ages seek information to improve the diagnosis,
treatment, and survival of this tumor which impacts their lives; and
  WHEREAS, It is vital that those with ependymoma, their  families,  and
health  care providers understand the full realm of available treatments
and seek competent and. professional care; and
  WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater  public  awareness  of
this serious health issue, and more must be done to increase activity at
both  the local and State level to support the patients as well as their
families; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
memorialize  Governor  Andrew  M.  Cuomo  to proclaim April 18, 2013, as
Ependymoma Awareness Day in the State of New York, and to encourage  all
New  Yorkers  to learn more about the symptoms of ependymoma and support
improvements in treatment and quality of life for the patients;  and  be
it further
  RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted  to  The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York, and the CERN Foundation.
