LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College, Inc. upon the occasion of hosting its Annual Spring Scholarship
and Leadership Awards Luncheon on April 20, 2013

WHEREAS,  A great community is only as great as those persons and organ-
izations that provide exemplary service, whether  through  participation
in  voluntary  programs,  through  unique  personal achievement in their
profession or other endeavors, or simply  through  a  lifetime  of  good
citizenship; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Communi-
ty  Council  for Medgar Evers College, Inc. upon the occasion of hosting
its Annual Spring Scholarship and  Leadership  Awards  Luncheon,  to  be
celebrated  on  Saturday,  April  20,  2013,  at Medgar Evers College in
Brooklyn, New York; and
  WHEREAS, The Community Council for Medgar Evers College is a  not-for-
profit  organization  established  to  engage  community support for and
involvement with Medgar Evers College, City University of New York; and
  WHEREAS, The Annual Spring Scholarship and Leadership Awards  Luncheon
honors  distinguished  individuals  for their exemplary contributions to
the Medgar Evers College community; and
  WHEREAS, This year's honorees are: Octavia D. Hill,  President,  Delta
Rho  Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., recipient of the
Community  Service  Leadership  Award;  The  Reverend  Michael  Bacchus,
Pastor,  Full  Gospel  Assembly,  recipient of the Ecumenical Leadership
Award; Dr.   Edward Catapane,  Professor  of  Biology  at  Medgar  Evers
College,  recipient  of  the  Education Leadership Award; Dr. John Louis
Flateau, Chair of the Department of Public Administration in the  Medgar
Evers  College School of Business, recipient of the Education Leadership
Award; Shanaya Herbert, student  in  the  Class  of  2013  Medgar  Evers
College Preparatory School, recipient of the Youth Leadership Award; and
Dr.  Roscoe C. Brown Jr., Director of the Center for Urban Policy Educa-
tion CUNY Graduate School and University Center, recipient of the  Life-
time Leadership Award; and
  WHEREAS,  Composed of residents, organizations, faculty, students, and
elected officials of the Central Brooklyn area,  the  Community  Council
for Medgar Evers College was formed in the early 1960s at the insistence
of community residents initially to ensure a four-year college be estab-
lished in the Central Brooklyn community; and
  WHEREAS,  A  vital component of the Community Council for Medgar Evers
College's efforts to support the mission of Medgar Evers College  is  to
actively  seek  resources  for  and  provide  scholarships  to deserving
students, which it has done proudly since 1980; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those organiza-
tions which enhance the quality of life in  their  community,  and  have
shown  a long and sustained commitment to supporting the academic excel-
lence of our institutions of higher learning, certainly have earned  the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Community Council for Medgar Evers College,  Inc.  upon  the
occasion  of hosting its Annual Spring Scholarship and Leadership Awards
Luncheon on April 20, 2013; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Community Council for Medgar Evers College, Inc., and the
aforementioned honorees.
