LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION congratulating Magdelene Williams upon the occa-
sion of her 100th Birthday

WHEREAS, Magdelene Williams joyfully celebrated her  100th  birthday  on
Sunday,  March 24, 2013 with her Bushwick Parish United Methodist Church
Family during its 11:00 am Worship  service,  followed  by  a  12:30  pm
Birthday Celebration Luncheon; and
  WHEREAS,  The second youngest of nine children, Magdelene Williams was
born in Red Springs, North Carolina on March  24,  1913;  she  moved  to
Brooklyn,  New York during the "Great Depression" in the late 1930s; she
found work as a housekeeper and continued to work very hard for the same
family until she was in her nineties; and
  WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her  zest  for  life,  has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
  WHEREAS,  Magdelene  Williams  married  Howard Williams who died acci-
dentally while her children were still young; she has been a  widow  for
more than sixty-five years; and
  WHEREAS, Choosing not to remarry, Magdelene Williams worked and raised
her  five children as a single parent; she is also the proud grandmother
of nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and
  WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has been a faithful member of  Bushwick  Parish
United  Methodist Church since 1960; although she likes to remain in the
background, she served as a Sunday school teacher and  gave  instruction
in needlepoint, crocheting, and quilting; and
  WHEREAS,  Magdelene  Williams continues to do quilting; another of her
favorite pastimes is walking; she walks around  the  neighborhood  daily
and walks to church every Sunday; and
  WHEREAS,  This distinguished woman, who has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of  and  reserved  for  those  with  the
stamina  and courage to savor a full life, has inspired the lives of her
many friends and family; and
  WHEREAS, This beloved lady has enriched the lives of those around  her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
  WHEREAS,  It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and  celebrated  the  innovations,  cultural  developments  and  awesome
achievements  of  this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this  great  Empire  State;
and
  WHEREAS, Magdelene Williams loves her Lord and her church and her life
is a blessing to all who meet her; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Magdelene Williams upon the occasion of her 100th Birthday;
and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Magdelene Williams.
