LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Paul Marius Beer, M.D. upon the occasion
of  his  designation  as  recipient of the 2013 Professional of the Year
Award by the Northeastern Association of the Blind

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize  and  pay
tribute  to those distinguished citizens who devote their time and ener-
gies to the service of their community and profession, participating  in
civic  affairs  and  enhancing the character and quality of life for all
citizens; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Paul
Marius  Beer,  M.D. upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2013 Professional of the Year Award by the Northeastern  Association
of the Blind; this auspicious occasion will be celebrated at the Associ-
ation's  2013 Visionary Gala, to be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at
the Albany Country Club in Voorheesville, New York; and
  WHEREAS, An ophthalmologist and retina specialist, Paul  Marius  Beer,
M.D.  is  a  longtime  supporter  of the Northeastern Association of the
Blind; and
  WHEREAS, In 2002, Paul Marius Beer, M.D. founded  Retina  Consultants,
the  largest  and most prestigious specialty retina group in the Capital
District; he continues to serve patients from  across  northeastern  New
York and western Massachusetts; and
  WHEREAS, In addition to his numerous clinical and teaching activities,
Paul Marius Beer, M.D. is involved in cutting-edge research, investigat-
ing  new  techniques  and therapies for diabetic retinopathy and macular
degeneration; he has founded the  Retina  Research  Foundation  and  the
Retina Research Center in Slingerlands, New York, to support and promote
clinical trials in the New York Capital District; and
  WHEREAS,  The  recipient  of numerous prestigious professional awards,
Paul Marius Beer, M.D. was instrumental in  organizing  exhibitions  for
the Blind Artists' Society; and
  WHEREAS,  Paul  Marius  Beer, M.D. received his Bachelor's degree from
Columbia University and his Medical degree from  SUNY  Stony  Brook;  in
1986,  he  received  a  fellowship at the Louisiana State University Eye
Center where he specialized in diseases and surgery of  the  retina  and
vitreous; and
  WHEREAS,  Following his faculty teaching positions at Columbia Univer-
sity and Albany Medical College, Paul Marius Beer, M.D. was Professor of
Ophthalmology and Director of the  Retina  Division  at  Albany  Medical
College; and
  WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Paul Marius Beer, M.D.
has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
  WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Paul Marius Beer, M.D. has displayed
throughout his life; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their profession  and  community,
and  have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence, certainly
have earned the recognition and applause of all citizens of  this  great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Paul Marius Beer, M.D. upon the occasion  of  his  designation  as
recipient of the 2013 Professional of the Year Award by the Northeastern
Association of the Blind; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Paul Marius Beer, M.D.
