LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating THIRTEEN/WNET upon the occasion of
celebrating 50 years of service to the New York Metropolitan area

WHEREAS,  It  is  the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality of
life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by its
exceptional cultural and educational institutions; and
  WHEREAS, It is also the sense of this  Legislative  Body  that  insti-
tutions  that give positive definition to the profile and disposition of
the communities of the State of New York profoundly strengthen our soci-
ety with their commitment; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing  traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late THIRTEEN/WNET upon the occasion of celebrating 50 years of  service
to  the  New  York  Metropolitan  area; this auspicious occasion will be
celebrated on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, with a banquet dinner at the  Hop
Lee Restaurant in New York City; and
  WHEREAS,  A member of the WNET family of companies, THIRTEEN is one of
America's most respected and innovative public media providers; it is  a
unique  cultural and educational institution that harnesses the power of
television and electronic media  to  inform,  enlighten,  entertain  and
inspire; and
  WHEREAS, THIRTEEN is the flagship public television station of the New
York  City tri-state area and the most watched public television channel
in the nation; it reaches millions of people with programming that cele-
brates arts and culture, offers insightful commentary on the news of the
day, explores the worlds of science and nature, and  invites  people  of
all ages to have fun while learning; and
  WHEREAS,  THIRTEEN's  broadcast  schedule  features  a  dynamic mix of
programming, much of it created in its own studios, including: "Nature",
"American Masters", "Great Performances" and "Need to Know"; and
  WHEREAS, In addition, THIRTEEN produces a range of local  programming,
including  "Reel  13",  an on-air, online film series; "Treasures of New
York" and "NYC-ARTS", a weekly showcase for the city's  cultural  offer-
ings; and
  WHEREAS,  THIRTEEN's daily schedule features acclaimed PBS series such
as  "Frontline",  "NOVA",  "Masterpiece",  "American   Experience"   and
"Antiques  Roadshow",  as well as such beloved children's programming as
"Sesame Street", and "Cyberchase"; and
  WHEREAS, As part of its mission to use media to create lifelong learn-
ing opportunities, THIRTEEN's Education department extends the  life  of
on-air  programming  through  online  initiatives, supplemental teaching
material and community outreach; largely supported by private and  foun-
dation contributions, THIRTEEN is among the largest membership organiza-
tions in the New York area; and
  WHEREAS,  This  auspicious  occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to THIRTEEN/WNET; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when  organiza-
tions  of  such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
congratulate  THIRTEEN/WNET upon the occasion of celebrating 50 years of
service to the New York Metropolitan area; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to THIRTEEN/WNET.
