LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring Donald E. DeSmith upon the occasion of
his retirement from the Ontario County Sheriff's Office after  41  years
of distinguished service

WHEREAS,  It  is  the  custom  of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would  devote  them-
selves  to  public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in
providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their  communities
and this great Empire State; and
  WHEREAS,  Within  every  community  of the State of New York there are
certain individuals who, by virtue of their commitment  and  dedication,
command  the  respect  and admiration of their community for their exem-
plary contributions and service on behalf of others; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concerns, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body  is  justly  proud  to  honor
Donald  E.  DeSmith upon the occasion of his retirement from the Ontario
County Sheriff's Office after 41  years  of  distinguished  service;  he
officially stepped down as Chief Deputy Sheriff on January 31, 2013; and
  WHEREAS,  Donald  E. DeSmith began his exemplary career with the sher-
iff's office as a part-time deputy on May 15, 1972; he was  promoted  to
Sergeant  in  1977,  and  was appointed Chief Deputy Sheriff in February
1982, a position he held until his retirement; and
  WHEREAS, As Chief Deputy Sheriff, Donald E. DeSmith  expertly  oversaw
the  daily operations of the sheriff's office and earned the respect and
admiration of his peers, colleagues, and community  for  his  enthusiasm
and  consummate  professionalism;  among his many accomplishments, he is
widely known and lauded for helping the Ontario County Sheriff's  Office
achieve full accreditation; and
  WHEREAS,  His success in leading that vital effort benefited more than
Ontario County; Donald E. DeSmith went on to  assist  sheriff's  depart-
ments  throughout  New York State with the accreditation process, and he
became a national assessor, inspecting police agencies around the  coun-
try; and
  WHEREAS,  Donald  E.  DeSmith earned an associate's degree in criminal
justice from Monroe Community College in 1971, and a  bachelor's  degree
in interdisciplinary studies from Empire State College in 2004; in addi-
tion, he completed management training at the Federal Bureau of Investi-
gation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, in 1988, and was a Master
Instructor at the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy; and
  WHEREAS, Donald E. DeSmith has been called upon to contribute his time
and  talents  to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; for many years he was an invaluable asset
on the county STOP-DWI Traffic Safety Board, and he served on the Marcus
Whitman School Board for 12 years as a member and two  years  as  Presi-
dent; and
  WHEREAS,  With him throughout have been his wife of 41 years, Marilyn,
and their two children, Matthew (Michelle) DeSmith and Suzanne  (Jeremy)
Kierst,  as  well  as  four  grandchildren, Morgan, Madelyn, Griffin and
Austin, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and
  WHEREAS, For his retirement, Donald E. DeSmith is looking  forward  to
spending  time  with  his  family  and  to continuing his service to the
community through volunteer work; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those dedicated
public servants who unselfishly devote their lives to  the  preservation
of order and the protection of others are worthy and due full praise for
their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Donald E. DeSmith upon the occasion of  his  retirement  from  the
Ontario County Sheriff's Office after 41 years of distinguished service,
and  to  wish  him  the  best of luck in his future endeavors; and be it
further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Donald E. DeSmith.
