LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring  Mary Luckern upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2013 Citizen of the Year  Award  by  the
Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce, on April 18, 2013

WHEREAS,  The  quality  and  character  of life in this Nation, and this
great Empire State, is reflective of the purposeful lives and good works
of those patriotic and civic-minded community members who dedicate their
lives and careers to the service of others; and
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body  to  recognize  the
achievements  of  those citizens who have made significant contributions
to the communities of the State of New York; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concerns, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Mary
Luckern upon the occasion of her designation as recipient  of  the  2013
Citizen  of the Year Award by the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce, to be
celebrated at a special Dinner on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at  Belhurst
Castle in Geneva, New York; and
  WHEREAS,  This esteemed award recognizes an individual who has unself-
ishly given to the community and created a more dignified, unique  place
in which to work and live; and
  WHEREAS, Mary Luckern has given not only of her time and energies, but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special recognition; and
  WHEREAS,  The  daughter  of  Sylvester  and  Nell  Miles Luckern, Mary
Luckern grew up in the Finger Lakes area,  and  attended  St.  Patrick's
Elementary School in Seneca Falls, New York; and
  WHEREAS,  Mary Luckern pursued a career in education and worked in the
Geneva school system for many  years  as  a  teacher  and  administrator
before retiring as a school principal; and
  WHEREAS,  Mary  Luckern  further established herself as an educational
leader in her region by taking on such roles  as  Chairman  of  Geneva's
Program  for Gifted Children, serving as the professional staff's admin-
istrative representative to the Geneva Board of Education,  and  as  the
leading  voice  on  the State Board of Directors representing the Region
and also serves as Chairman of the  Ontario  County  National  Education
Association; and
  WHEREAS,  Mary Luckern has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; and
  WHEREAS, The quintessential civic leader, Mary Luckern has been Super-
visor of the Town of Geneva since 1998, the first woman ever elected  to
that  post; she is also a member of the Ontario County Board of Supervi-
sors, she serves as the Ontario County  representative  on  the  Tourism
Board,  and  is  a  presence  on the Ontario County Economic Development
Committee; and
  WHEREAS, In addition, this impressive citizen is a member of the Gene-
va Scholarship Board of Hobart  and  William  Smith  Colleges,  a  Board
Member of the Geneva Rotary Club, a staunch advocate and Board Member of
the  Boys and Girls Club of Geneva, an Ex Officio Member of the Board of
Directors of Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce and is  an  active  partic-
ipant  in the work of the Geneva Historical Society where she remains an
Ex Officio member of its Board of Trustees; and
  WHEREAS, Well-known for her dedication to the community, Mary  Luckern
has  received  countless  honors  and  awards;  she  was named "National
Distinguished Elementary Principal for New York State in 1988,  received
the Sharing the Light award for service to others in 1996; and was named
a Paul Harris Fellow in 2005; and

  WHEREAS,  Throughout  the  entire  period  of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Mary Luckern has stood  constant  in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown  a
long  and  sustained  commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
honor Mary Luckern upon the occasion of her designation as the recipient
of  the  2013  Citizen  of  the Year Award by the Geneva Area Chamber of
Commerce on April 18, 2013; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mary Luckern.
