Honoring the Newburgh Lions Club upon the occasion of its 90th Anniversary

LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring the Newburgh Lions Club upon the occa-
sion of celebrating its 90th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative  Body  to  pay  tribute  to
those  renowned  organizations  which devote their energy, resources and
thoughtful care to improving the quality of life in  their  communities;
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor  the
Newburgh  Lions  Club upon the occasion of their 90th Anniversary, to be
celebrated at its Gala event on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the  Colden
Manor at Spruce Lodge, Montgomery, New York; and
  WHEREAS, The Newburgh Lions Club is part of the largest service organ-
ization in the world; Lions Club International is an organization deeply
committed to meeting the challenges of public service; and
  WHEREAS,  The  goal  of  the  Newburgh Lions Club and the entire Lions
Organization is to evaluate the  needs  within  the  community,  without
regard  to  politics,  religion  or  race,  and  to support humanitarian
projects in response to those needs; and
  WHEREAS, Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind
and visually-impaired; this service began when Helen  Keller  challenged
the  Lions  to  become  her "knights of the blind in the crusade against
darkness" during the Lions' 1925 international convention; and
  WHEREAS, Currently, the Newburgh Lions Club's Sight Program focuses on
under-served children in the Newburgh School District who  would  other-
wise  fall  through the cracks of the health care system; the program is
aided by the caring nurses of the school district who identify and refer
those students in need of glasses; and
  WHEREAS, The Newburgh Lions Club also  serves  the  community  through
volunteering  and in myriad other ways, providing support to such events
as the Newburgh Community Cleanup, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters  Holiday
Party,  and  the NFA "Block N Awards"; and sponsoring the Lions Scholar-
ship Awards, the annual Safe Harbors Off Broadway 5K Run, and the  White
Cane Day for Independent Living; and
  WHEREAS,  Furthermore, the Newburgh Lions Club lends a helping hand to
individuals, bestowing a scholarship  to  a  Mount  Saint  Mary  College
student  and installing a flag pole at the home of a returning Afghanis-
tan war veteran, to name a few; and
  WHEREAS, After 90 years of outstanding accomplishments,  the  Newburgh
Lions  Club  is destined to continue its noble mission of service to the
community, and to the world,  exemplifying  the  ideals  of  Lions  Club
International for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Newburgh Lions Club upon the occasion of celebrating its  90th
Anniversary,  and  to  commend  its  members, past and present, who have
labored so conscientiously to secure and improve the quality of life  in
the community; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Newburgh Lions Club.
