LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commemorating  the  200th  Anniversary  of  the
Watervliet Arsenal

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to observe significant
events which represent turning points in our unique  history  and  which
are indelibly etched in the saga of our great Nation; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  commem-
orate the 200th Anniversary of the Watervliet Arsenal on Friday, May 10,
2013, at the Watervliet Cultural Center in Watervliet, New York; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Watervliet  Arsenal  is an arsenal of the United States
Army located in Watervliet, New York;  it  is  the  oldest  continuously
active  arsenal  in  the  United  States, and today produces much of the
artillery for the army as well as gun tubes for  cannons,  mortars,  and
tanks; and
  WHEREAS,  Becoming  a  National Historic Landmark in 1966, the arsenal
was founded in 1813 to support the War of 1812; it was designated as the
Watervliet Arsenal in 1817; and
  WHEREAS, The Watervliet Arsenal is occupied on 142 acres of land;  the
site  contains manufacturing, administrative offices, storage areas, and
a museum tracing weaponry from the 17th century through modem times; and
  WHEREAS, In addition, the Watervliet Arsenal contains the Army's Benet
Laboratories, which performs product development, improvement, research,
and testing; it bears the historic Iron Building which currently  serves
as the Watervliet Arsenal Museum; and
  WHEREAS,  It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to  our  atten-
tion,  they  should  be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the  200th Anniversary of the Watervliet Arsenal; and be it
further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Watervliet Arsenal.
