LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION congratulating Laura Sliker upon the occasion of
receiving the distinguished Girl Scout Gold Award, the most  prestigious
of Girl Scouting honors, on April 30, 2013

WHEREAS,  Laura  Sliker,  a member of Girl Scout Troop 60860 in Geneseo,
New York, has, through her diligence and rigorous efforts, achieved Girl
Scouting's highest and most  prestigious  honor,  the  Girl  Scout  Gold
Award; she will be honored by the Girl Scouts of Western New York at its
Girl Scouts Showcase to be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2013; and
  WHEREAS,  America  has  achieved her greatest heights of glory through
the dedication, determination and tireless efforts  of  the  outstanding
citizens of this nation; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is only with the continued diligence and devotion of our
youth, tomorrow's leaders, that America will maintain her glory; and
  WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of America and its members are dedicated  to  the
development of character and leadership in the youth of this nation; and
  WHEREAS,  Since  1980,  Senior  Girl Scouts have capped their years of
achievement in Girl Scouting with the Girl Scout Gold Award; and
  WHEREAS, In order to earn the Girl  Scout  Gold  Award,  a  girl  must
complete  five  requirements,  all  of  which demand efficient organiza-
tional, time  management,  and  leadership  skills;  chief  among  these
requirements  is  the  design  and  completion  of  a Gold Award Service
Project which must build upon the  interests  of  the  girl,  provide  a
service to the community, and be of lasting benefit; and
  WHEREAS,  This  outstanding  young woman has been involved in Scouting
for many years, has lived up to Scouting's ideals and has  attained  all
of the necessary achievements; and
  WHEREAS,  For  her  Gold  Award  project  entitled "Bread for Celiac's
Initiative," Laura Sliker addressed the  lack  of  gluten-free  products
available in restaurants and the inability of restaurants to accommodate
the needs of people who are gluten intolerant; and
  WHEREAS,  She  contacted  and met with restaurant managers and servers
and created an informative website about gluten intolerance  and  Celiac
Disease; and
  WHEREAS,  Laura  Sliker's  project served the needs of the gluten-free
community in Rochester, Albany, and  Syracuse,  New  York  and  Orlando,
Florida  and  helped to make it easier for gluten intolerant individuals
to eat in restaurants and to improve their quality of life; and
  WHEREAS, Happily, Laura Sliker had success with some  of  the  restau-
rants she approached and they are now serving some gluten-free products;
  WHEREAS,  Laura  Sliker  is  a  credit  to her family, her school, her
community, her State and her nation, and no doubt  her  future  will  be
filled with accomplishments of equal importance; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative Body pause in its deliberations, in
recognition of the significance  of  this  meritorious  achievement,  to
congratulate and honor Laura Sliker upon the occasion of her designation
as the recipient of a Girl Scout Gold Award on April 30, 2013; and be it
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Laura Sliker.
