LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Douglas Horton for his heroic actions at
the Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida

WHEREAS,  It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those who
have performed acts of heroism in their everyday lives; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to  honor  Douglas
"Smokey"  Horton,  a  Mexico resident, and second generation fireman and
first responder for his heroism; and
  WHEREAS, On Saturday, February 23, 2013, Doug Horton was  attending  a
weekend  race  at  the  Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach,
Florida, following his participation in training exercises for emergency
extrication for his employer, Jerome Fire Equipment,  when  a  collision
occurred  during  the  race, causing flying debris to land in the stands
near him, seriously injuring other spectators; and
  WHEREAS, Doug Horton responded quickly, providing valuable  lifesaving
treatment to an injured spectator until paramedics could arrive; and
  WHEREAS, Doug Horton was greeted at the Speedway the following day, as
a hero and thanked for a job well done; and
  WHEREAS,  Residents  of this great State must never forget the courage
of the men and women who step up and perform heroic acts in their every-
day lives; and
  WHEREAS, Having exhibited bravery and heroism, Doug  "Smokey"  Horton,
has  earned  the  respect  of  his  State and deserves to be recognized,
commended and thanked by the people of New York for  his  heroism;  now,
therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Douglas "Smokey" Horton, for his heroic  actions  at  the  Daytona
International  Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, on February 23, 2013;
and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Douglas Horton.
