LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the members of Save The River upon the
occasion  of  their  designation for special recognition for their dedi-
cation and ceaseless efforts to preserve the St. Lawrence River

WHEREAS, 35 years ago, a group of concerned citizens  came  together  to
protect  and preserve the ecological integrity of the St. Lawrence River
through advocacy, education and research; and
  WHEREAS, Since then, the members of Save The River have  made  it  the
leading  grassroots  advocacy  group to protect one of the world's great
rivers; and
  WHEREAS, As Northern New York's major environmental watchdog, Save The
River has advocated at the  local,  state,  national  and  international
levels  to  protect  and  preserve this international resource along the
border between the United States and Canada; and
  WHEREAS, Save The River's membership have become international leaders
in the campaign to stop the introduction of  aquatic  invasive  species,
improve water levels and improve spill response planning; and
  WHEREAS,  The  group  has  helped  restore  endangered  and threatened
species like the common tern and bald eagle population through education
and volunteer efforts; and
  WHEREAS, Its members have helped monitor the  water  quality  at  area
beaches,  encouraged the marking of navigational hazards and shoals, and
built a cadre of volunteers who keep an eye out for pollution,  wildlife
die offs, and other changes in the ecosystem; and
  WHEREAS,  Today, Save The River represents more than 1,400 individuals
and families who live, work and  play  along  the  St.  Lawrence  River,
including residents, business owners, summer people, vacationers, Ameri-
cans, Canadians and others who love one of North America's great natural
resources; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the members of Save The River upon the occasion of their  desig-
nation  for  special  recognition  for  their  dedication  and ceaseless
efforts to preserve the St. Lawrence River; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the members of Save The River.
