LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION recognizing the Third Annual Lewis County Police
Appreciation Ceremony, to be held on Police Appreciation  Day,  May  17,
2013

WHEREAS,  It  is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the long-
standing efforts of law enforcement in the State of New York which dili-
gently contributes to the efficient operation of  our  criminal  justice
system; and
  WHEREAS, Annually, National Police Week and National Police Day, honor
the  service  and  sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in
the line of duty while protecting our communities and safe-guarding  our
democracy; and
  WHEREAS,  There  are  approximately  900,000  law enforcement officers
serving in communities across the United States; and
  WHEREAS, Nearly 60,000 assaults against law enforcement  officers  are
reported each year, resulting in approximately 16,000 injuries; and
  WHEREAS,  Since  the  first  recorded death in 1791, almost 20,000 law
enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate  sacri-
fice and been killed in the line of duty; and
  WHEREAS,  The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on
the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in  Washing-
ton, D.C.; and
  WHEREAS, On National Police Day, May 17, 2013, the Lewis County Police
Appreciation  Committee will be holding its third consecutive evening of
recognition for fallen, retired and active  law  enforcement  personnel;
and
  WHEREAS,  At the Third Annual Lewis County Police Appreciation Ceremo-
ny, fallen officers and their families will be honored by  live  bagpipe
music,  guest speakers and displayed historical pictures of police agen-
cies and employees; an essay contest is also  sponsored  for  all  sixth
graders in Lewis County; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Lewis  County  Sheriff's Office, New York State Police,
Lowville Village Police, New  York  State  Department  of  Environmental
Conservation  and New York State Forest Rangers will be participating in
the Third Annual Lewis County Police Appreciation Ceremony; and
  WHEREAS, In addition, during National Police Week,  May  12-18,  2013,
all businesses and residences in Lewis County are asked to decorate with
blue  lights  and  ribbons  in  honor  of fallen, retired and active law
enforcement personnel and their families; and
  WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a  unique  opportunity  for
this  Legislative  Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Third Annual
Lewis County Police Appreciation Ceremony; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
recognize the Third Annual Lewis County Police Appreciation Ceremony, to
be held on Police Appreciation Day; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Lewis County Police Appreciation Committee.
