LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Brook Peters upon the occasion of the
selection of his film, "The Second Day" for screening at the Tribeca
Film Festival on April 30, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Brook Peters upon the occasion of the selection of his film, "The Second
Day" for screening at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, April 30,
2011; and
WHEREAS, Fourteen year-old Brook Peters' film, "The Second Day" docu-
ments the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and the effect it had on
some of the 5,600-plus children who attended school near Ground Zero;
and
WHEREAS, Brook Peters had just started school at P.S. 150, eight
blocks from the World Trade Center, when the hijacked planes flew over
his public school toward the Twin Towers; and
WHEREAS, At the age of 11, Brook Peters began filming "The Second Day"
as a personal project, inspired by his own memories of the catastrophe;
in his spare time, he conducted approximately 18 hours of interviews
which he shot on a basic camcorder and edited on family friends' comput-
ers; and
WHEREAS, The finished product, "The Second Day" is a 38-minute movie
compiled from 20 interviews with students, teachers, firefighters and
others; it has become part of the public narrative of documenting and
memorializing the attacks and aims to view the disaster from a vantage
point of the children in its midst; and
WHEREAS, With his sense of civic duty and his commitment to others,
Brook Peters represents the best development of the potential which is
inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Brook Peters upon the occasion of the selection of his film, "The
Second Day" for screening at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 30,
2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Brook Peters.
