LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Peter S. Kalikow upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Peter S. Kalikow has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Peter S. Kali-
kow upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by
Hofstra University on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at its 13th Annual Gala;
and
WHEREAS, Born in New York City, Peter Kalikow received his Bachelor of
Science degree in Business Administration in 1966 from Hofstra Universi-
ty; he is President of H. J. Kalikow & Company, LLC, one of New York
City's leading real estate firms; in addition, he is the former Chairman
of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), former Commissioner
of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and past owner and
publisher of the NEW YORK POST; and
WHEREAS, In May of 2000, Peter Kalikow was named Chairman of the Grand
Central Partnership Board of Directors; the Grand Central Partnership is
one of the largest and most successful Business Improvement Districts
(BIDs) in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Peter Kalikow began his career in real estate in 1967 and
became President of H. J. Kalikow & Co. in 1973; following his father's
death in 1982, he assumed responsibility for all Kalikow holdings; he is
the third generation to preside over his family's 82-year-old real
estate company founded in 1927; and
WHEREAS, In June of 1994, Peter Kalikow was appointed to the Metropol-
itan Transportation Authority (MTA) of the State of New York; he served
on the Board as its Chairman until October of 2007; in April of 1995, he
was appointed a Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York & New
Jersey; and
WHEREAS, Peter Kalikow is an active participant in every major real
estate association and has served as director of many organizations; he
is also extremely active in civic affairs and numerous religious and
philanthropic efforts; many awards attest to his efforts, generosity and
participation in these causes; and
WHEREAS, Peter Kalikow is a Trustee of New York-Presbyterian Hospital
and Chairman of the Real Estate Committee; in May of 1997, the Peter and
Mary Kalikow Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was established at New York
Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Peter Kalikow served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish
National Fund and is a founder of the Museum of Jewish Heritage; in
1995, he received the Jerusalem 3000 Award from the State of Israel
Bonds for his efforts as General Chairman, Real Estate Division of Isra-
el Bonds for the past eight years; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, Peter Kalikow was awarded the "Commendatore in the
Order of Merit of the Italian Republic" by the Consul General of Italy
Francesco M. Talo; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Mary, their two chil-
dren, Nicholas and Kathryn, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Peter Kalikow has displayed through-
out his life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Peter S. Kalikow upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Peter S. Kalikow.
