Honoring Dorothy DeMay upon the occasion of being selected as Wayne County's 2013 Senior Citizen of the Year

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dorothy DeMay upon the occasion of being
selected as Wayne County's 2013 Senior Citizen of the Year

WHEREAS,  Senior  citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society;  their  past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
  WHEREAS,  This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dorothy DeMay
upon the occasion of being selected as Wayne County's 2013 Senior  Citi-
zen  of  the  Year  for  her  outstanding contributions to the community
through her valuable and much appreciated volunteer work; and
  WHEREAS, As Wayne County's 2013 Senior Citizen of  the  Year,  Dorothy
DeMay  will participate in the Annual New York State Senior Citizens Day
Luncheon hosted by the State Office for the Aging  (SOFA)  at  the  Hart
Theatre  Lounge  in  the Egg, Albany, New York, on Tuesday, May 7, 2013;
  WHEREAS, The theme for this year's event, Unleash the  Power  of  Age,
recognizes  the  potential  energies  of  older individuals which can be
unleashed through civic engagement to address pressing social and commu-
nity needs; and
  WHEREAS, Dorothy DeMay is in her 80s, and lives in Newark,  New  York,
and has been involved in helping people her whole life; and
  WHEREAS, She has been active in her church, at the hospital, and nurs-
ing  homes  and  has  read with children at local schools, served summer
lunches to kids, done financial counseling, helped with fundraisers, and
even drove to Seneca County to volunteer, all since  2004  working  with
the RSVP program; and
  WHEREAS,  Dorothy  DeMay  still  makes nursing home visits, and drives
older citizens to their doctor appointments in  her  own  car,  a  great
service  which  helps people remain in their own homes, living independ-
ently, even if they have limitations; and
  WHEREAS, Dorothy DeMay's first volunteer assignment was  reading  with
children  at  Perkins Elementary School in Newark; Dorothy loves to read
and likes to encourage others to do so as well; and
  WHEREAS, Dorothy DeMay believes that like herself, many people  volun-
teer  because  they  want  to be useful and help people, and, because it
keeps life interesting; and
  WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Dorothy DeMay's distinguished record
merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative  Body;
now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dorothy DeMay upon the occasion of her designation as a  recipient
of  a  2013  New  York State Senior Citizen of the Year Award; and be it
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dorothy DeMay.
