LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring  Gladys W. Joyner upon the occasion of
being selected as Queens County's 2013 Senior Citizen of the Year

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and  knowledge  to
the  increasingly  active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  honor  Gladys  W.
Joyner  upon  the  occasion  of  being  selected as Queens County's 2013
Senior Citizen of the Year, in recognition of  her  invaluable  contrib-
utions  to  the community through her outstanding, and much appreciated,
volunteer work; and
  WHEREAS, As Queens County's 2013 Senior Citizen of the Year, Gladys W.
Joyner will participate in the Annual New York State Senior Citizens Day
Luncheon, hosted by the State Office for the Aging (SOFA), at  the  Hart
Theatre  Lounge  in  the Egg, Albany, New York, on Tuesday, May 7, 2013;
and
  WHEREAS, The theme for this year's event, Unleash the  Power  of  Age,
recognizes  the  potential  energies  of  older individuals which can be
unleashed through civic engagement to address pressing social and commu-
nity needs; and
  WHEREAS, Gladys Joyner has lived in New York for over  70  years;  she
has  raised  four  children  and  has been a mentor and second mother to
many; she is also the loving grandmother of six grandchildren and  eight
great-grandchildren; and
  WHEREAS,  A  retired Federal Government employee, Gladys W. Joyner not
only volunteers as a foster grandparent, she is also  a  member  of  the
auxiliary  board for Queens Hospital Center, and works with the Board of
Elections; and
  WHEREAS, Gladys W. Joyner has been part of the Queens  Borough  Chorus
in  the past and has always enjoyed giving time to help the youth in her
community; and
  WHEREAS, For 12 years, Gladys has been volunteering for Queens  Hospi-
tal  Center; she enjoys the satisfaction of giving love and attention to
those in need; seeing the smiles on the children's faces when she  walks
in the door is her greatest reward; and
  WHEREAS,  A  true  asset  to society, Gladys W. Joyner's distinguished
record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
honor  Gladys  W.  Joyner  upon the occasion of being selected as Queens
County's 2013 Senior Citizen of the Year; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gladys W. Joyner.
