LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  congratulating  the  Sagtikos  Manor Historical
Society upon the occasion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that  the  quality  of
life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by its
exceptional cultural, educational and recreational institutions; and
  WHEREAS,  It  is  also  the sense of this Legislative Body that insti-
tutions that give positive definition to the profile and disposition  of
the communities of the State of New York profoundly strengthen our soci-
ety with their commitment; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to  congratu-
late  the  Sagtikos  Manor Historical Society upon the occasion of cele-
brating  its  50th  Anniversary;  this  auspicious  occasion   will   be
celebrated  at  a  50th Anniversary Gala to be held at Sagtikos Manor on
Sunday, May 19, 2013; and
  WHEREAS, Chartered by the Regents of the University of  the  State  of
New  York,  the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society was founded in 1963 by
the then Islip Town Historian, George L. Weeks, Jr., and a  small  group
interested  in  preserving  the  rich  history of a growing and changing
suburban area; and
  WHEREAS, As stated in the Charter of  the  Sagtikos  Manor  Historical
Society, the intent and purposes of the Society are to preserve and work
for  the  preservation  of historical buildings and landmarks in Suffolk
County, New York, and to acquire, own and  maintain  one  or  more  such
landmarks  and  historical  buildings,  to maintain a museum and exhibit
therein letters and other written material and artifacts  of  historical
interest; and
  WHEREAS, In addition, the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society was formed
to  promote and encourage historical research, and to foster and promote
public knowledge of and interest in local and natural history; and
  WHEREAS, At the time the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society was  found-
ed, the Sagtikos Manor was owned by Robert David Lion Gardiner; and
  WHEREAS,  In  2002, Suffolk County acquired Sagtikos Manor; the county
maintains the house and grounds and the Sagtikos Manor Historical Socie-
ty contracts with the county to give tours  of  Sagtikos  Manor  and  to
cooperate in its restoration; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Sagtikos Manor Historical Society has been able to fund
many restorations both in the house and on the grounds as the result  of
fund  raisers,  grants  and generous donations; all monies raised by the
Society at the Manor go to the restoration program; and
  WHEREAS, The G.L. Weeks Long Island History Collection, maintained  by
the  Sagtikos  Manor  Historical  Society,  contains  reference material
pertaining to the history of Islip Town and Long Island; it is housed in
the Higbie Lane Community Center in West Islip, New York; and
  WHEREAS, On Sunday, May 19, 2013, the Sagtikos Manor Historical Socie-
ty will  hold  its  50th  Anniversary  Gala;  this  auspicious  occasion
presents  an  opportunity for this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when  organiza-
tions  of  such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
congratulate  the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society upon the occasion of
celebrating its 50th Anniversary; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society.
