LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION Honoring Cheryl Gravelle upon the occasion of her
retirement  as  the  Librarian  of the Williamson Free Public Library of
Williamson, New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that  the
quality  and  character of life in the communities of New York State are
reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of  certain  exemplary
institutions  and  individuals whose purpose is dedicated to serving the
community and the needs of its citizens; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing  traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor and
commend Cheryl Gravelle upon the  occasion  of  her  retirement  as  the
Librarian  of the Williamson Free Public Library of Williamson, New York
after 39 years of dedicated and distinguished service  to  the  citizens
and institutions of Williamson and surrounding Wayne County communities;
and
  WHEREAS,  Cheryl  Gravelle  served  as  the Library's Librarian for 39
years; her mother, Ethel Roche, instilled a love of reading in Cheryl at
a very young age and suggested she might like to become a librarian; and
  WHEREAS, The family is from Brighton,  Monroe  County,  but  moved  to
Williamson  when  Cheryl  was  eight; she graduated from Williamson High
School and attended SUNY Oswego, graduating with a degree in  education;
and
  WHEREAS,  Cheryl  Gravelle  worked as a substitute teacher for a while
but, when she was offered a job at the Williamson  Library  in  1974  by
then  Director  Lorriane  Miller,  Cheryl  welcomed  the opportunity and
accepted; and
  WHEREAS, She started as a Clerk and became  Children's  Specialist  in
1989;  in  1999  she  was  made  Library Manager; and, in that role, she
helped facilitate the planning and construction of Williamson's  present
library; and
  WHEREAS, Cheryl Gravelle also worked to improve the library's technol-
ogy  and automated its checkout system; she also saw the library transi-
tion from the Wayne County Library System to the Wayne-Ontario System to
the Pioneer Library System, which includes the 42  libraries  of  Wayne,
Livingston, Ontario and Wyoming counties; and
  WHEREAS,  70,000 people come into the Williamson library each year; 70
percent of the residents of Williamson have a library card and,  accord-
ing to Hennen's American Public Library Ratings, Williamson has been one
of the Top 10 libraries in the nation for the past five years; and
  WHEREAS, Under Cheryl Gravelle's leadership the library has introduced
pre-school  programs,  a  knitter's  group, and the adult Book Ends book
review club; and
  WHEREAS, Cheryl Gravelle rendered faithful, conscientious and valuable
service to Williamson Free Public Library and those  it  serves  for  39
years; she has served with loyalty, honor and distinction and has justly
earned the admiration, esteem and affection of her colleagues and commu-
nity; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Cheryl Gravelle  upon  the  occasion  of  her  retirement  as  the
esteemed  Librarian of the Williamson Free Public Library of Williamson,
New York after 39 years of dedicated and distinguished service;  and  be
it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Cheryl Gravelle.
