LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Gene Nachamkin upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the Flame of Hope Award by the Epilepsy
Foundation of Northeastern New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and
character of life in the communities across New York State are reflec-
tive of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations and indi-
viduals who devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Gene Nachamkin upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Flame of Hope Award by the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York
to be celebrated at its 25th Annual Confections in Chocolate Gala, on
Saturday, March 9, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York works dili-
gently to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in
all life experiences and to prevent, control and cure epilepsy through
services, education, advocacy and research; and
WHEREAS, As residents of Northeastern New York face the physical,
emotional and social uncertainties of epilepsy everyday, the Epilepsy
Foundation is there to help them become happy, self-confident, produc-
tive adults, by offering them, as well as their friends, families and
caregivers a variety of programs; and
WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York proudly
recognizes those who have made significant contributions to increasing
awareness of epilepsy and in support of the Epilepsy Foundation of
Northeastern New York's efforts with its Flame of Hope Award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gene Nachamkin, the third recipient of the Flame of Hope
Award, truly merits this high honor; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gene Nachamkin currently serves as Immediate Past Presi-
dent of the Board of the Directors for the Epilepsy Foundation of North-
eastern New York; furthermore, he served as President/Board Chair of the
affiliate for four years; and
WHEREAS, During that time, the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New
York achieved Standards of Excellence, opened its first satellite
office, launched a Care and Cure fund to raise money for research and
raised the most at a single fundraising event in its history; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gene Nachamkin played an active role and was an integral
part of each of these achievements; he has been instrumental in raising
revenue for the Foundation through the introduction of new corporate
sponsors and donors; he has also increased the awareness of epilepsy and
the programs and services provided by the Foundation to the community
through his outreach efforts; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Gene Nachamkin has been involved in epilepsy advocacy
efforts on both the state and local levels and was recently selected as
a Board Member of the National Epilepsy Foundation and serves on four
committees of that organization; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
recognize Dr. Gene Nachamkin for his unwavering commitment to the
Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Gene Nachamkin upon the occasion of his designation as recipi-
ent of the Flame of Hope Award by the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeast-
ern New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Gene Nachamkin.
