LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the
successful operations of Gillinder Glass in Port Jervis, New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the achievements of individuals and businesses which contribute
substantially to the economic health and vitality of the communities of
the State of New York, and to their quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the successful operation of Gillinder
Glass in Port Jervis, New York; and
WHEREAS, Gillinder Glass, located at 39 Erie Street in Port Jervis'
West End, is now in its 100th year; and
WHEREAS, William T. Gillinder, who was born and raised in England,
founded Gillinder Glass in 1861 in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, In 1912, three Gillinder brothers, grandsons of William,
bought the glass plant in Port Jervis formerly known as Orange County
Flint Glass Work and, in January 1913, opened the plant as Gillinder
Brothers; and
WHEREAS, Today, Gillinder Glass is owned and operated by sixth-genera-
tion Charles Gillinder; and
WHEREAS, Gillinder Glass is primarily an industrial and commercial
specialty glass manufacturer; and
WHEREAS, About 50 percent of the airport runway lights used in the
United States, as well as landscape lighting and glass for other light-
ing applications, is manufactured at Gillinder Glass; and
WHEREAS, Gillinder Glass's historic factory is open for tours and
demonstrations of glass pressing during regular weekday production and
for glass blowing with guest glass artists during special weekend
events; and
WHEREAS, Businesses, such as Gillinder Glass, and its owners and
employees, exert a strong, positive influence on the communities and
businesses they serve and are an essential component of the economy of
the Empire State, and of the quality of life of its communities; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional business and its contributions to the local and
State economies, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
success it has worked so hard to achieve; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the successful operations of
Gillinder Glass in Port Jervis, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Charles Gillender.
