LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION honoring West Genesee High School Lacrosse Coach
Mike Messere upon the occasion of his induction into the  National  High
School Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and recognize
those  dedicated  individuals  in  our  midst, who strive to enhance the
quality of life within our communities, by providing exceptional leader-
ship and guidance to our youth; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing  traditions,  it  is  the  intent  of  this Legislative Body to
commemorate Coach Mike Messere upon his induction into the National High
School Hall of Fame; and
  WHEREAS, Coach Mike Messere is among four athletes, five  high  school
coaches,  two  officials,  one  administrator, and one in the performing
arts to be inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame  on  June
27, 2013; and
  WHEREAS,  A  native  of  Central  New  York, Coach Mike Messere played
lacrosse for the West Genesee Wildcats and for Cortland State; and
  WHEREAS, Coach Mike Messere has served as head coach of the West Gene-
see High School Boys Lacrosse Team for the past 37 years; and
  WHEREAS, Since becoming West Genesee's Head Coach in 1976, Coach  Mike
Messere's  teams have posted a record of 757-55, winning more games than
any other high school or college lacrosse coach in history; and
  WHEREAS, Coached by Messere, the West Genesee Wildcats have won 15 New
York State Public High School  Athletic  Association  championships,  29
Section III Titles, and have produced more than 50 scholastic All-Ameri-
cans; and
  WHEREAS,  From  1981-1984, under the leadership of Coach Mike Messere,
the West Genesee Wildcats established a national  record  of  a  91-game
consecutive winning streak; and
  WHEREAS, Throughout his many years of coaching, Coach Mike Messere has
had  a  strong  influence on both the athletic and academic successes of
his student athletes by helping them  find  the  best  higher  education
possible; and
  WHEREAS, Coach Mike Messere has influenced thousands of players during
his  coaching  tenure,  including  NCAA  coaches  John Desko of Syracuse
University, Dan Sheehan of Le Moyne College, Jeff Tambroni  of  Cornell,
and Steve Beville of Cortland State; and
  WHEREAS,  Coach  Mike  Messere  has  also  received numerous accolades
during his coaching tenure, including induction into the  1985  Cortland
Hall  of  Fame, the 1992 Upstate New York Chapter Hall of Fame, the 1994
United States Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and the  Post-Standard  Achievement
Award; and
  WHEREAS, Messere is part of the 2013 National High School Hall of Fame
induction  class that includes former Washington Redskins and Notre Dame
quarterback Joe Theismann and NBA player Chauncey  Billups  of  the  Los
Angeles Clippers; and
  WHEREAS, West Genesee lacrosse is not only an excellent representation
of  the  school  district,  but  is also the pride and joy of the entire
Camillus community; and
  WHEREAS, Throughout Coach Mike Messere's life his friends, family, and
former and present players have  felt  privileged  to  be  part  of  his
successes,  and  rejoice in this outstanding accomplishment; now, there-
fore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
honor  and  recognize  Coach  Mike  Messere  upon  the  occasion  of his
induction into the National High School Hall of Fame; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Coach Mike Messere.
