LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commending Firefighter Kyle VerStraete upon the
occasion of his designation as Firefighter of the Year by the Marbletown
Fire Department for his heroic action in saving a  life,  on  April  20,
2013

WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring concern and heroic  acts  of  individuals  in  public
service  who  take prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations
in an effort to preserve the life of another; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing  traditions,  this  Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Firefighter Kyle VerStraete upon the  occasion  of  his  designation  as
Firefighter of the Year by the Marbletown Fire Department for his heroic
action  in  saving  a  life;  he  was honored at the Department's Annual
Banquet on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Finger Lakes Racino in Farm-
ington, New York; and
  WHEREAS, A 2010 graduate of Newark High School, Kyle VerStraete  is  a
five-year  member  of  the Marbletown Fire Department where he currently
holds the office of RIT Captain; he is also a member  of  Newark-Arcadia
EMS where he is a driver; and
  WHEREAS,  On  the  night of December 12, 2012, Kyle VerStraete entered
the home of a man suffering cardiac arrest; he quickly took over from  a
family  member performing CPR on the stricken man and, after determining
that the patient had  no  pulse  and  was  not  breathing,  began  chest
compressions; and
  WHEREAS,  After five chest compressions, Kyle VerStraete noticed move-
ment in the patient's throat, whereupon he checked the patient's  pulse,
determined  that he did indeed have a pulse but still was not breathing,
and performed rescue breathing for the patient, continuing  to  work  on
him after the Newark-Arcadia EMS arrived, and following the ambulance to
the hospital; and
  WHEREAS,  The  patient ultimately made a full recovery; he was home in
time to meet his new granddaughter and enjoy Christmas with his  family;
and
  WHEREAS,  At  the age of 20, Kyle VerStraete has already established a
record of excellence; in 2009 he was recipient of the Volunteer  of  the
Year  Award by the Fire Department and, in 2010, he received the distin-
guished rank of Eagle Scout; and
  WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his fiance, Annalise Yager, and
his daughter, Addison VerStraete, both of whom feel privileged to  be  a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
  WHEREAS, Kyle VerStraete has truly distinguished himself as one of New
York's  finest;  when  an act of such heroism is brought to our official
attention, the same should  be  memorialized  for  the  edification  and
emulation of all; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Firefighter Kyle VerStraete upon the occasion of his designation
as Firefighter of the Year by the Marbletown  Fire  Department  for  his
heroic action in saving a life; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Firefighter Kyle VerStraete.
