LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  congratulating  Sarah Horowitz Gorelik upon the
occasion of celebrating her 104th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and  knowledge  to
the  increasingly  active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
  WHEREAS, Born on May 7, 1909, in Brooklyn,  New  York,  to  immigrants
Nathan and Sophie Horowitz, Sarah Horowitz entered kindergarten speaking
only  Yiddish;  at the age of 12, when children of immigrants were often
obliged to abridge their  education  and  join  the  workforce,  Sarah's
teachers convinced her parents their daughter was unusually talented and
should continue her education; and
  WHEREAS, She attended Girls High School and later graduated from Hunt-
er  College  with a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology; learning
and education would remain Sarah's life-long pursuit; and
  WHEREAS, At the age of 19, Sarah married Dr. Aaron Gorelik, a  pioneer
in open-heart surgery; she raised her two children, Elihu and Rena, in a
Bronx  apartment  where  she  lived  with her parents; today, she is the
proud grandmother of six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and
  WHEREAS, Over the years, Sarah Horowitz Gorelik  opened  her  home  to
those  in  need,  among  them,  Jewish  refugees  who fled Nazi-occupied
Europe; she devoted her life to teaching and all who have come  to  know
Sarah have been awed by her infinite curiosity; and
  WHEREAS,  As  her  family  grew,  so did her commitment to sharing her
knowledge with others, especially young people; Sarah  Horowitz  Gorelik
has  tutored  her  own  children, her grandchildren, and the children of
neighbors and friends; many can say that it is due to  the  hours  spent
with  "Ema," as all know her, that algebraic formulations grew fascinat-
ing, as did chemistry and physics  experiments,  Greco-Roman  mythology,
Italian  opera, and Jewish history and literature, to name just a few of
Sarah's interests; and
  WHEREAS, Her success rate in helping so many struggling students  pass
the  New  York  State  Regents, and with high scores, was impeccable; to
this day, Sarah Horowitz Gorelik continues to work with  students,  read
voraciously,  stay  current with the ever-changing world of science, and
do her own taxes; and
  WHEREAS, Sarah Horowitz Gorelik does all this without  a  computer  or
any other technological gadget; her tools, an inquiring mind and a book,
have served her well; and
  WHEREAS,  At the amazing age of 104, Sarah Horowitz Gorelik is a model
for all citizens who seek to leave a legacy of learning,  teaching,  and
generosity; and
  WHEREAS,  This  exceptional  centenarian,  with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; she has expe-
rienced the incredible joys and sorrows characteristic of  and  reserved
for those with the stamina and courage to savor a full life; and
  WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
  WHEREAS,  It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and  celebrated  the  innovations,  cultural  developments  and  awesome
achievements  of  this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this  great  Empire  State;
now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Sarah Horowitz Gorelik  upon  the  occasion  of  her  104th
Birthday; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sarah Horowitz Gorelik.
