Honoring Harneet Gulati upon the occasion of being named the Hicksville Boys & Girls Club 2013 Youth of the Year

LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring  Harneet  Gulati  upon the occasion of
being named the Hicksville Boys & Girls Club 2013 Youth of the Year

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize  and  pay
tribute  to  those  young  people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and  who  serve  as  role
models for their peers; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body  is  justly  proud  to  honor
Harneet  Gulati  upon  the occasion of being named the Hicksville Boys &
Girls Club 2013 Youth of the Year; and
  WHEREAS, Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a  Boys  &
Girls  Club  member  can  receive; the nomination recognizes outstanding
contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys  &  Girls
Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles; the hono-
rees  are  shining examples and living proof that great futures start at
Boys & Girls Clubs; and
  WHEREAS, For the past three years, Harneet Gulati has been  an  active
member of the Hicksville Boys & Girls Club; as a Sikh individual born in
the  United  States,  she  was once a quiet and diffident girl until she
found the positive environment at the Club where no one judged anyone on
outer appearances but only on the person within; and
  WHEREAS, As an active member and volunteer at the  Hicksville  Boys  &
Girls Club, Harneet Gulati joined the Tutoring Program in early March of
her  sophomore  year in high school; she has served a total of 618 hours
of community service; and
  WHEREAS, In addition to tutoring young people in mathematics,  English
and  science  every  week, Harneet Gulati is President of the Hicksville
Boys & Girls Club Torch Club; torch clubs help members attain leadership
qualities by providing service to not only their  club  but  also  their
community; and
  WHEREAS, Harneet Gulati began her Torch Club service in 2011 as Secre-
tary,  and  was  elected President of the Club in 2012; her volunteerism
with the Club included multiple Walks and Fundraisers, including  a  car
wash  for  the  A.M.T.  Children of Hope Foundation that helps abandoned
babies find their safe haven; and
  WHEREAS, In addition to her service at the  Hicksville  Boys  &  Girls
Club,  Harneet  Gulati participated in community service efforts held by
the Kiwanis Education Youth Club; she joined Key Club  in  her  freshman
year of high school and was voted as Key Club Secretary in her sophomore
year; as a junior, she was elected Key Club Vice President; and
  WHEREAS,  As Vice President of Key Club, Harneet Gulati works with the
members of the Kiwanis organization to provide service with the goal  of
helping others; the Hicksville Key Club has participated at many events,
including the Pancake Breakfast, Three Kings Night, Pasta Night, and the
Luck of the Irish Drawings, as well as the Christmas in July Food Drive,
the  Breast  Cancer  Walk,  Thanksgiving  Wrapping Party, and the Annual
Wellness Fair at Hicksville High School; and
  WHEREAS, As a freshman in high  school,  Harneet  Gulati  was  elected
President  of  the  Class  of 2013; she soon became eligible to become a
member of the National Honor Society as well as the Math Honor  Society;
  WHEREAS, The highlight of Harneet Gulati's high school career has been
the  Poetry  Out Loud Competition; she was a finalist at the school-wide
competition and became a Regional Finalist; and
  WHEREAS, Harneet Gulati is acknowledged as a scholar  for  ranking  in
the  top  twenty  percent of her high school class; in addition, she has

been involved in several clubs at school, including  the  Helping  Hands
Club; and
  WHEREAS,  Upon  graduation from high school, Harneet Gulati intends to
major in health related fields in  college  and  dedicate  her  time  to
improving the quality of other people's lives; she aspires to becoming a
physical therapist and obtaining a doctorate in physiotherapy; and
  WHEREAS,  It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor the youth
of today, and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best
exemplify the ideals and  values  cherished  by  this  great  State  and
Nation; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Harneet Gulati upon the occasion of  being  named  the  Hicksville
Boys & Girls Club 2013 Youth of the Year; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Harneet Gulati.
