LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  mourning the death of Leonard Szymanski, former
Mayor of Sloan, New York

WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow and deep regret that  this  Legislative
Body  records  the passing of Leonard Szymanski, noting the significance
of his purposeful life and accomplishments; and
  WHEREAS, Former Mayor Leonard Szymanski died on Monday, May 27,  2013,
at  the  age  of 78; he was a sheet metal worker and also worked for the
Niagara Frontier Transit Authority; he was heavily involved in volunteer
and public service projects; and
  WHEREAS, In the 1970s, Leonard Szymanski founded Cheektowaga  Airlanes
Football,  a league that blossomed into a large organization; he was the
director of Cheektowaga Southside Little League and coached many  teams,
including  an  all-star  squad  that was one game from winning the state
championship; he also coached Depew Legion baseball; and
  WHEREAS, After he retired, Leonard  Szymanski  stayed  active  in  the
Sloan  community; he was elected to serve on the Sloan Village Board and
was a member for eight years before becoming mayor and was also  village
recreation director; and
  WHEREAS,  In  2005, Leonard Szymanski was elected mayor, a position he
held until his resignation in the summer of 2012; during his time on the
Village Board, he obtained many grants for the village and was  able  to
improve a number of public services; and
  WHEREAS, Leonard Szymanski rebuilt Wrazen Park and started the concert
series in the Sloan parks; he also helped the Sloan Fire Department make
improvements to the station and secure a new truck and uniforms; and
  WHEREAS,  A  fourth-degree Knight of Columbus, Leonard Szymanski was a
man of the people who  had  an  open-door  policy  as  mayor  and  would
patiently listen to anyone in need; he was active at St. Andrew's Church
in  Sloan,  serving as social chairman of the church's Holy Name Society
and was an usher; and
  WHEREAS, Leonard Szymanski is survived by  his  wife,  Frances,  their
three sons, Mark, Brian and David, and their six grandchildren; and
  WHEREAS,  Armed  with  a  humanistic  spirit,  imbued  with a sense of
compassion, Leonard Szymanski leaves behind a  legacy  which  will  long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Leonard Szymanski, former Mayor of Sloan,  New  York;
and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Leonard Szymanski.
