LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Sistas Healing Old Wounds upon the
occasion  of hosting its 1st Annual Freedom, Unshackled Awards Dinner on
June 28, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that  the
quality  and  character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of  the
community and its citizenry; and
  WHEREAS, Individuals and organizations devoted to improving the quali-
ty of life for others, enabling them to build lives of dignity and self-
worth are deserving of the highest praise and recognition; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  commend
the Sistas Healing Old Wounds upon the occasion of hosting its 1st Annu-
al  Freedom,  Unshackled  Awards Dinner on Friday, June 28, 2013, at the
Creole Restaurant and Music Supper Club in Harlem, New York; and
  WHEREAS, Sistas Healing Old Wounds (SHOW), is a statewide organization
based in Albany, New York, who work with women housed in State, City and
County Correctional Facilities, as well as those women who  have  re-en-
tered  society,  and are engaged in services provided by community based
organizations; and
  WHEREAS, Founded in 2011, SHOW is a not for profit organization  whose
primary mission is to assist women who are in correctional settings, and
those integrating back into society, with life-long results; and
  WHEREAS, SHOW aims to serve as a clearinghouse for information regard-
ing  women,  women's  health  disparities, women in the criminal justice
system, women who are substance abusers, environmental,  emotional,  and
community issues, as well as information and resources; and
  WHEREAS, Furthermore, SHOW strives to bridge the gap between policies,
procedures, programs, and the women they serve, to ensure better service
provision  to  incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women; programs on
incarceration, housing,  employment  options,  and  budgeting  are  also
facilitated  to  encourage,  strengthen,  and uplift these women so that
they are no longer part of the problem, but  part  of  the  solution  in
healing broken communities; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those organiza-
tions  and  individuals who enhance the well-being and vitality of their
community and have shown a long and sustained commitment  to  excellence
certainly  have  earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commend  the  Sistas Healing Old Wounds upon the occasion of hosting its
1st Annual Freedom, Unshackled Awards Dinner on June 28, 2013; and be it
further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sistas Healing Old Wounds.
