LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  congratulating  Columbia Memorial Hospital upon
the occasion of receiving a National Center of Excellence  Accreditation
in minimally invasive gynecological surgery

WHEREAS,  It  is  the  sense  of  this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievement of those individuals and organizations  which  substantially
contribute  to  the  health  and  wellbeing  of the people of the Empire
State; and
  WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body  to  recognize
those  hospitals  within the State of New York which provide outstanding
medical care and vital services to meet the healthcare  needs  of  their
patients; and
  WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to  congratu-
late  Columbia  Memorial  Hospital  upon  the  occasion  of  receiving a
National Center of Excellence Accreditation in minimally invasive  gyne-
cological surgery; and
  WHEREAS,  Columbia  Memorial  Hospital in Hudson, New York, has served
the region since 1893; it is one of  the  newest,  most  innovative  and
technically  advanced facilities in the Hudson Valley; its mission is to
provide its communities with safe, high  quality,  comprehensive  health
care services in a dignified and compassionate environment; and
  WHEREAS,  Serving  more than 100,000 residents in Columbia, Greene and
Dutchess  counties,  Columbia  Memorial  Hospital  focuses  on  advanced
surgery,  primary  care and health education; it is a 192-bed acute care
hospital and also operates a 120-bed long-term care site, as well as  26
outlying primary and specialty care centers; and
  WHEREAS,  The  Women's  Health  Center  at  Columbia Memorial Hospital
became the first hospital in New York State to receive  National  Center
of  Excellence Accreditation in minimally invasive gynecological surgery
(laparoscopy) from the American Institute of Minimally Invasive  Surgery
(AIMIS); and
  WHEREAS,  AIMIS  awards the Center of Excellence designation to organ-
izations that meet national standards for minimally invasive procedures;
and
  WHEREAS, According to AIMIS, the Columbia  Memorial  Hospital  Women's
Health  Center  will have national and international recognition for the
priority the hospital places on minimally invasive surgery  which  helps
minimize recovery times and provides better patient outcomes; and
  WHEREAS,  The  surgeons from Columbia Memorial Hospital Women's Health
Center cited as winning  GYN  surgeons  were:  Dr.  Edward  Marici,  Dr.
Lawrence  Perl, Dr. Tanya Mays-Jeune, Dr. Suzanne Mesidor and Dr. Marcel
Hinds; and
  WHEREAS, The surgeons from Columbia Memorial Hospital  Women's  Health
Center  began  their  quest  for national accreditation three years ago;
together they have performed some 350 minimally invasive hysterectomies;
since 2008 they have doubled the number of laparoscopic procedures; and
  WHEREAS, The Women's Health Center had to meet a national standard  of
performing  hysterectomies where no less than 80 per cent of all surgery
was done laparoscopically; Columbia Memorial Hospital does 97  per  cent
of their hysterectomies laparoscopically, and while the national average
for  complication is one per cent, Columbia Memorial Hospital's surgeons
had zero complications; and
  WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when  organiza-
tions and individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought
to  our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
congratulate Columbia Memorial Hospital upon the occasion of receiving a
National  Center of Excellence Accreditation in minimally invasive gyne-
cological surgery; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Columbia Memorial Hospital.
