Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church

LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commemorating the 100th Anniversary of St. Hugh
of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church, to be celebrated on November 17, 2013

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and  the  many  spiritual,  social  and
educational  benefits  they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
  WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State  and  this  Nation  to  pay
tribute  to  those  institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes  pleasure  in  commemorating  the
100th Anniversary of St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church, Hunting-
ton Station, New York; the year-long celebration of this milestone event
will culminate in a special Liturgy on Sunday, November 17, 2013; and
  WHEREAS,  St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church was established as
a mission of St. Patrick's parish in 1907 in a chapel built on  property
donated  in  memory  of  Hugh McLaughlin, hence the name of the church's
patron saint; and
  WHEREAS, St. Hugh of Lincoln became a parish in 1913,  and  built  its
first  school  in  1925;  in the ensuing years, the congregation grew so
much that services had to be held in the church's basement; a new church
building was completed in 1952; and
  WHEREAS, In 1956, St. Hugh of Lincoln  opened  a  new,  larger  school
building;  the population of Catholics in the area had expanded rapidly,
and the size of the parish had swelled to include 7,000 families; and
  WHEREAS, The present congregation of St. Hugh of Lincoln is a  vibrant
mixture,  consisting of families with multigenerational histories in the
parish, families new to the suburbs, and recent immigrant  families,  as
well as refugees from areas of political strife; and
  WHEREAS,  St.  Hugh  of  Lincoln  celebrates its ethnic and linguistic
diversity; its regular weekend services are held in English and Spanish,
there are multilingual worship services on special days  and  occasional
cultural celebrations; and
  WHEREAS,  St.  Hugh  of Lincoln is deeply committed to, and has a long
history of, helping  all  in  the  community  who  need  assistance;  it
provides  direct  aid  through  its  Outreach program as well as the St.
Vincent de Paul Society, which is available when Outreach is closed  and
serves  Thanksgiving  and  Easter dinner annually; and, in addition, the
parish lets its  space  to  community  service  organizations,  such  as
Project Hope and the Family Service League; and
  WHEREAS,  St.  Hugh  of  Lincoln  Roman  Catholic Church stands on the
threshold of tomorrow, prepared to meet the  challenges  of  the  coming
decades  while  retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its
past; and
  WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body  to  take  note  of
enduring  religious  institutions  and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commemorate  the 100th Anniversary of St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic
Church, Huntington Station, New York, to be  observed  on  November  17,
2013,  fully  confident  that  this commemoration reflects the belief in
those values which enhance the dignity and purpose of life;  and  be  it
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to St. Hugh of Lincoln Roman Catholic Church.
