LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  honoring  Edwin N. Nelson, Jr.  for 65 Years of
Dedicated Service to the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Company

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this  Legislative  Body  to  recognize  and
acknowledge  the significant milestones in the distinguished fire fight-
ing careers of esteemed residents of this great Empire State; and
  WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its  long-
standing  traditions,  this  Legislative  Body  is justly proud to honor
Edwin N. Nelson, Jr. for his 65  years  of  service  with  the  Lakewood
Volunteer Fire Company; and
  WHEREAS,  The  firefighters  of New York State are renowned throughout
the Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the  ardu-
ous field of fire protection and prevention; and
  WHEREAS,  Since  the  early  days  of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our  great  State's  efforts  to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
  WHEREAS,  Volunteer  firefighters  and fire companies not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other  activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
  WHEREAS,  This dedicated firefighter has served as an active member of
the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Company since joining the  fire  company  in
1948; and
  WHEREAS,  Edwin  N.  Nelson,  Jr.  has  responded  to well over 11,000
alarms, and has consistently been among the top ten  responders  in  the
company,  responding to 425 out of 776 calls in 2012 alone; he has often
distinguished himself as the top responder and was designated  as  Fire-
fighter of the Year by his peers in 2011; and
  WHEREAS,  This  distinguished Veteran also served as a Machinist Mate,
2nd Class, in the United States Navy  onboard  USS  Braine  (DD-630),  a
Fletcher  class  destroyer;  he is a life member of the American Legion;
  WHEREAS, Service to the community was an established  practice  within
his family; his father joined the Lakewood Fire Company in 1939; and his
mother  was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary; his three brothers
were also members of the fire company, and two of his sisters served  in
the auxiliary; and
  WHEREAS,  A  devoted  family  man,  Edwin  N. Nelson, Jr. and his wife
raised five children; many of his children and  grandchildren  continued
the  family  tradition of volunteering with the fire service; his daugh-
ter, Linda, and his grandson, Colten, continue to  actively  serve  with
the Lakewood Fire Company; and
  WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and  a  tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is  in  need;  now,
therefore, be it
  RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Edwin N. Nelson, Jr. for his 65 years of dedicated service to  the
Lakewood Volunteer Fire Company; and be it further
  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Edwin N. Nelson, Jr.
