LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Carolina Salguero upon the occasion of
her  designation  as  recipient  of  the  New  York Harbor Historic Ship
Steward of Excellence by the National Maritime  Historical  Society,  on
May 21, 2013

WHEREAS,  Individuals  who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
  WHEREAS, Carolina Salguero has given not only of her time and energies
but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
  WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  commend  Carolina
Salguero  upon  the  occasion of her designation as recipient of the New
York Harbor Historic Ship Steward of Excellence by the National Maritime
Historical Society; this noteworthy distinction was celebrated on  Tues-
day,  May  21,  2013,  aboard  the  MARY A. WHALEN, at Pier 11, Atlantic
Basin, Brooklyn, New York; and
  WHEREAS, The May 21st festivities also celebrated the 50th anniversary
of the National Maritime Historical Society (NMHS), and the  75th  anni-
versary of the MARY A. WHALEN; and
  WHEREAS,  The NMHS is the national voice for America's maritime herit-
age; it helps to raise awareness of our Nation's history  and  the  role
seafaring  has played in shaping the United States of America along with
the rest of the world; and
  WHEREAS, Carolina Salguero, Founder and Director of PortSide New York,
a nonprofit in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, received the NMHS Award
of Excellence for her work with the MARY A. WHALEN, a former oil  tanker
on the National Register of Historic Places that, since 2006, has served
as the base of operations for PortSide New York; and
  WHEREAS,  The  MARY  A.    WHALEN is the only former oil tanker in the
world that is used as a maritime center for education, cultural  events,
and advocacy; and
  WHEREAS,  Carolina Salguero was born in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, and
spent her teen years in New England; after graduating  magna  cum  laude
from Yale University with majors in Art and American Studies, she worked
around  the  world  as  a freelance documentary photographer and writer,
covering some of the most troubled locations on the globe; and
  WHEREAS, Since 1998, Carolina Salguero has been researching, document-
ing, boating, and advocating on behalf of New York City's waterfront; in
2002, she completed a two and a half year project on the city's tugboats
for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, which introduced her to the working waterfront;
and
  WHEREAS, Carolina Salguero supervised the haul-out and restoration  of
the  MARY  A.  WHALEN  in  the winter of 2007, and has helmed PortSide's
diverse mix of innovative programs relating to water issues,  waterfront
history,  maritime preservation and community revitalization ever since;
and
  WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period  of  her  community  service,  a
period of constructive involvement, Carolina Salguero has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
  WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual  for  the  benefit  of  others which Carolina Salguero has displayed
throughout her life; now, therefore, be it
  RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause  in  its  deliberations  to
commend Carolina Salguero upon the occasion of her designation as recip-
ient  of  the New York Harbor Historic Ship Steward of Excellence by the
National Maritime Historical Society; and be it further

  RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Carolina Salguero.
