LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring George Basler upon the occasion of his
retirement after 34 years of distinguished service to THE PRESS &
SUN-BULLETIN in Binghamton, New York

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
George Basler upon the occasion of his retirement after 34 years of
distinguished service to THE PRESS & SUN-BULLETIN in Binghamton, New
York; and
WHEREAS, A 1968 graduate of Georgetown University, George Basler
honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army,
stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, In 1978, George Basler started at the EVENING PRESS in Bing-
hamton; the paper later merged with the SUN-BULLETIN and became THE
PRESS & SUN-BULLETIN; and
WHEREAS, For the past 34 years, George Basler rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to THE PRESS & SUN-BULLETIN; and
WHEREAS, Primarily an education reporter, George Basler served with
loyalty, honor and distinction; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, George Basler was governed by a keen
sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems; and
WHEREAS, An ultimate professional, George Basler knew how to put
people at ease even while asking difficult questions; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, George Basler mentored many younger
journalists, molding them into high-quality news reporters whose skills
have greatly benefited numerous media outlets across Binghamton and
beyond; and
WHEREAS, Beloved by all with whom he worked, George Basler consistent-
ly kept the morale high in the newsroom with his sharp wit and fantastic
sense of humor; and
WHEREAS, A valued and involved member of his community, George Basler,
immediately upon retiring, began volunteering for Meals on Wheels and
for the Broome County Arts Council blog, where he is now chief theater
reviewer; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, and daughter, both of
whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his
achievements; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure with THE PRESS & SUN-BULLETIN, George
Basler earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor George Basler upon the occasion of his retirement after 34 years
of distinguished service to THE PRESS & SUN-BULLETIN in Binghamton, New
York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to George Basler.
